He was a leader of the political party founded by the group, as well as a member.
On the one hand, the controversy is that if he was truly outraged by the actions of the group, he should have left and distanced himself completely. On the other hand, he is not personally linked to any such actions, and is representing the non-violent outlet for the group’s members. The non-violent path should, it could be argued, by the one that is encouraged, particularly if it can show stronger results. It’s the only way to guide people away from militarism.
