'Hundreds held' in Bhutto raids

**So much for the big pictures and working in cahoots. If only we didn’t view everything as conspiracy theory and big plans and accept the reality i.e. it is all for the kursi and benefit of one person.

**‘Hundreds held’ in Bhutto raids **](BBC NEWS | South Asia | 'Hundreds held' in Bhutto raids)

The party of Pakistan’s former PM Benazir Bhutto has said more than 700 members were arrested overnight ahead of a planned mass rally on Friday. Activists were taken from their homes in the latest crackdown under emergency rule measures brought in on Saturday by President Pervez Musharraf.
**The raids came hours after US President George W Bush told Gen Musharraf in a “frank” phone call to hold polls soon.
Mr Bush told Gen Musharraf he could not be both army head and president. **

Ms Bhutto’s Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) is planning a huge public rally in Rawalpindi, close to the capital, Islamabad, on Friday.

Party spokeswoman Farzana Raja told Reuters news agency there had been mass detentions overnight in central Punjab province. The government has denied mass arrests.
Meanwhile, four people in Karachi have been charged with treason for alleged comments against emergency rule.

‘Suicide attacks’

Ms Bhutto had earlier insisted the rally would go ahead despite an official ban and called for a “long march” next week unless Gen Musharraf changed course

She is insisting that he restore the constitution, hold elections and resign as head of the army
Ms Bhutto is also demanding the release of lawyers, judges and activists detained in the past few days.
The authorities have warned that police will not allow the demonstration to go ahead.
Rawalpindi mayor Javed Akhlas said: “We will ensure that they don’t violate the ban on rallies, and if they do it, the government will take action according to the law.”
He told the Associated Press there was a “strong threat” of another suicide bomb attack against Ms Bhutto, who survived an assassination attempt in Karachi on 18 October that killed more than 140 people.
Protests since emergency rule was brought in have been limited but correspondents say the Rawalpindi rally could raise the stakes dramatically in the country’s political crisis.
Gen Musharraf said he declared the state of emergency because of a crisis caused by militant violence and an unruly judiciary.
The four people charged with treason in Karachi allegedly made anti-government remarks while leaving the city’s press club.
Two Baloch politicians, one Pashtun nationalist leader and a trade unionist were formally charged on Thursday. Treason can carry the death penalty.

‘Indispensable ally’

Mr Bush said he had spoken to Gen Musharraf by phone for 20 minutes.
“My message was that we believe strongly in elections and that you ought to have elections soon and you need to take off your uniform,” Mr Bush told reporters.
“You can’t be the president and the head of the military at the same time, so I had a very frank discussion with him.”
But Mr Bush also noted that Gen Musharraf had been an “indispensable ally”.
US Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte gave that same message to Congress.
“No country has done more in terms of inflicting damage and punishment on the Taleban and the al-Qaeda since 9/11… Their record is quite impressive,” he said.
But, he warned, “the longer the situation goes on in its present form, the more difficult it’s going to become”.

So opposing the dictator is treason now.

Re: 'Hundreds held' in Bhutto raids

Only 4?

Re: 'Hundreds held' in Bhutto raids

It was all TOPI DRAMA. I watched the whole protest on GeoTV and the way police were treating protester was like they don't wanna touch them. As compare to the brutality they showed since Sunday on Lawyers and Human Rights activists.

Re: 'Hundreds held' in Bhutto raids

So are you now saying that benazir at no time was trying to strike a deal with musharraf for her own sake. :) the secret meetings in dubai, the bhutto chants in western media are all just nothing eh.

right.

but the good thing is that we dont support any of these characters, or do you secretly support her ;)

Re: 'Hundreds held' in Bhutto raids

I was talking about labelling everything as topi drama. If I was supporting BB I would come out openly, I am not afraid like some here who support Musharraf but try to show they are neutral. :D

I used to support PPP in her fathers day but that was back in 70's, since she has come I am not a big fan of PPP nor her.

Now lets hear about your affiliations and not hide behind assumed neutrality.
