On the daily commute, unless something noteworthy has happened (train delay, medical emergency) people generally keep to themselves or their friends and don't really interact.
On longer travels, I will say smile, say hello, exchange some pleasantries and then will open my book to read or will pretend to take a nap and then ignore the seatmate for the rest of the trip. I HATE making small talk on flights - so totally aggravating!
