Human extinction

I was reading an article earlier how someone at Oxford has raised fears about our extinction, do you think it is likely to happen?

Personally I find the tech paranoia ala Terminator pretty unrealistic. However something like a virus that quickly spreads could kill of a large chunk of people but still leave some people unharmed.

Re: Human extinction

If dinosaurs can be extinct, why not us ?

Re: Human extinction

Yep but we have medicine, ability to seek shelter more quickly, adapt quicker, ability to rescue or care for the injured etc.

Re: Human extinction

A catastrophe greater than us might not give us a chance to save ourselves.
Anything can happen. Everything can't be predicted.

Re: Human extinction

we are measly in the grand scheme of things. a couple of large volcanos that wont stop erupting for a couple of years and we could be done for. or a frandly meteorite. or if ebola and common cold hooked up and made babies.

Re: Human extinction

^better known as the day of judgement?

Re: Human extinction

judgement by superbugs will be based on chromosomal mutations one accumulated rather than good karma. :p

Re: Human extinction

Misjudgment?

Re: Human extinction

I think its very likely that humans will become extinct. a large meteor can hit us, other terrible natural disasters, or even worse, a possible nuclear war can wipe out entire humanity.. the way things are going, who knows...

Re: Human extinction

Or Misbah may play one of his legendary innings. And that's all she wrote.

Re: Human extinction

What's worse? Being wiped out due to natural disasters and plagues..or...a holocaust? It's the thought of the latter that scares me more.

Re: Human extinction

It is quite possible.

No one can say how and when.

Re: Human extinction

The following article discusses this very issue and according to an author, if something does happen to us and/or other organisms in the future, it will be all our fault: Are we doomed? Elizabeth Kolbert explains why the world might be in the midst of a major mass extinction](http://www.cbc.ca/books/2014/02/are-we-doomed-elizabeth-kolbert-explains-why-the-world-might-be-in-the-midst-of-a-major-mass-extinct.html).

Re: Human extinction

Humans will probably destroy each other before any natural disaster strikes. -___-

Those who survive will be left to fend for themselves. Imagine being able to have enough anti-matter to vaporize a continent. Whether an impact of this size happens naturally or not, nothing will be left that can be consumed on earth. Most life will become extinct due to poisonous radiation. Radiation from antimatter has not been tested..well, we can't. If radiation doesn't kill you, starvation and thirst will.

Re: Human extinction

No football.

God damn radiation.
