I try not to poke my nose into other people's business, but public figures are an exception. Still I don't want to say everything I personally about movie stars, because it will be nothing but malicious gheebat. Suffice is to say, that where there is smoke, there is fire. :)
You might want to check your facts about Reema, Meera and Resham atleast. The rest I don't know. I, for one, will never give them a character certificate. If you are frequent patron of the coffee shop of PC Lahore, you can see from your own eyes on what goes on in the show business industry of Lollywood.
Another hint: Remember the Asif Zardari sex scandal? Those who were part of the investigations, swear that every word of it was true and some.

Pristine, please elaborate what do you mean by character certificate?
Does it mean that since they are prostitutes in your eyes, you consider them not worthy of your word of approval and respect?
While we are at it, tell me, how much have you deviated yourself from the contours of life in terms of your career, beliefs, and moral conduct that your parents brought you up with? And if you did more or less (good for you, nevertheless), how much freedom did you really have personally to break away from the stringencies of your upbringing that was part of you?
The particular women we are talking about belong to a certain class in our society. Most of them come from Hira Mandi or similar backgrounds. They are raised in a certain way. They were brought up in to serve a certain purpose. That's who they are, that's what their life is and unfortunately they never had a choice or the control of it. They became what they were brought up for. So now they got money and everybody expect them to suddenly become pious and Muslimahs?
I don't see nobody bashing the moronic director or the others. Is it because it's very easy and convenient to find a scapegoat and blame it all on one?

What everyone choses to do with their life is their own decision. These women may have made a decision themselves or it was made for them is really besides the point.
A statement was made that these women are not prostitutes. I define prostitution as having sex for money without anyone forcing you to do it. You may define it anyother way you like. Based on this definition, what I know, and what I have seen prevent me from saying they are not.
Whether I respect or approve of them, is again besides the point. Maybe I don't. I don't have to respect people I don't want to respect. I don't go out and fight these people but I don't mix with them either. Thats my choice.
You mention directors. Except a few whom we see on TV and limelight (Syed Noor, Shahzad Gul etc) most others are again a peculiar kind. The less said about them the better.
Have you ever seen a movie shot in the studios on Multan road. If you haven't than you wouldn't know what I am saying. Again suffice is to say that these people chose how they wish to live their lives. People don't bash those directors here because they are faceless, nameless people. These actresses, on the other hand, are known faces.
Then the problem is much deeper than it seems. Much has been hidden from the public, and most people dont go to Lahore every now and then, so i suppose unless you have seen things that make u feel that many of these girls are prostitutes, you really can't tell.
But, even if they are, at least they are trying to move beyond heera mandi by making something of themselves...
and not all the movies produced in our film industry are that bad in terms of sexual affairs.

Trust me, any girl who is half-way decent-looking tries to move out of heera mandi (or Shahi mohalla, as it is called) at her earliest convenience (in filmi terms it is called "chance milna"). All those extras you see dancing in the background are not paid a lot of money (Rs 100 per day in most cases), but they immediately attach the title of "film star" with their names as it hikes up their prices a lot (In one case, a lady hiked up her price to Rs 15,000 just after one dance sequence in a two-bit movie called Ziddi-something - this was in 1996. I dunno the current situation or rates).
The popular movie actresses, like Reema, Meera and Resham, have made a lot of money and have beautiful homes in Lahore. I am sure some part of their income is from movies. But I suspect a bigger chunk of their revenue is still derived from live performances.
Re: your last statement, no more comments. :)
So Pristine, how many number of "besides the point" we got so far?
Right. One is a "malicious gheebat", the other is character approval, and rest is besides the point.
The question was whether they are prostitutes. I believe I answered that.
The other two questions on (a) whether I respect them and (b) who made them prostitutes, are not something I am discussing. If you had started a thread asking "how many of you respect prostitutes?", I probably wouldn't even answer. :)
....In one case, a lady hiked up her price to Rs 15,000 just after one dance sequence in a two-bit movie called Ziddi-something - this was in 1996. I dunno the current situation or rates)...
She hiked her movie price 15,000 or live performace price 15,000 (and I don't mean the hira-mandi "live" performance price.. ahemm)?!?
Hehehe... ghalib, movies don't pay that much to extras. Some extras would even work for free, just to get the 'feeling' and get 'in'.
allright pristine, I am all confused now. How come you're so privy to such pricing information....
[This message has been edited by ghalib (edited March 27, 2002).]
You are talking about movies? Well, I knew someone who knew someone and who knew someone else in the movie business, so one day we all went to several studios. Actually it was a lot of fun, watching the shoots and all that.
Most studios are right next to each other on the Multan road in Lahore. At some other time, I will probably share some stories on how antiquated their equipment is and how tiring the work of movie-making actually is.
What was the 15,000 for that you were talking about??
I'd rather not say. Aap khud aqalmandd heiN. :)
Those who follow the filmi-news in local newspapers sometimes, read stories, that "fullan producer is upset at that actress for her unprofessional attitude". Basically it is when the actresses suddenly leave town on their live performances and keep the producer hanging with no prior intimation.

Friendship is a precious gift from ALLAH, only lucky ppl have got this gift. And thank God, I am among those ppl
Allright, so back to the part where I got confused in the first place:
How come you're so privy to such pricing information??
Can I take the Fifth Amendment? :)
Thats a wrong time to be claiming "The 5th" knowing the Industry you work in.....
My interest in pricing is purely academic. Trust me. :-o
Ok, so going back to the topic at hand. So Pristine, not giving a character certificate is not a form of mallicious gheebat?
What is this character certificate anyway? Explain to me again, please.
Also, why don't you just come straight out and say, "hey, I don't respect prostitutes". Why do you need to first secure a respectable, self-promoting, holier-than-thou position by condemning it (calling it "mallicious gheebat" ie) and then just shooting of slandorous connotation about their characters?
Tell me, are you trying to be socially polite, politically correct, or deceptively holier? No, really.
