I happened many times before. But at that time, the population was not so huge and dense.
On June 30, 1977 it rained heavily here in Karachi - a super flood in Malir river (there were no protected embankment then - later World Bank sponosered embankment was built during 1983-1986). More than 300 people lost their lives on that day.

Can you explian how the advertising boards (billboards?) were the cause of the major disaster?

^ last time a big number of 'hoardings' (weaker billboards) lost their grounds and fell on people/vehicles causing lots of damage.

The one that i remember was in 1992-93. It took me 9 hours to get home from school. Askari apartments was renamed Askari Falls.

There was no rain in 1993. I think you are talking about the rain that fell on August 18, 1992. It started at about 10 am and continued till 12.30. That was one of the heaviest rains in Karachi.
