I saw a link on the GeoTV website, where it had ‘quotes’ from people who actually have an informed opnion, and are not just zealots (on wither side of the debate - You know, totally for or totally against)
I was personally surprised at the comments they’ve posted. They’re pretty much unanimous that it is possible and should be possible to alter the ordinance, since humans are interpreting Divine Laws.
Interesting..
From what I know Hudood Ordinance is usually not in favor of women and (like locking up rape victims becoz they commit zinna by being raped) and oppresses them (which Islam does not). I wonder why they didn't ask any women? Or do they think women are not able to have informed and logical opinions.
This shouldn't be surprising. There is near unanimity among the religious right (at least those who are urbanized) that the Hudood ordinances are flawed.
The real sparks fly when the secularists pipe in and demand that the laws be eliminated, not modified. This then moves the discussion away from how to fix the ordinances, to the sophomoric discussion on whether Pakistan should be a secular state or not. And in the end, many more women are victimized.
