Isn’t it the same company that BB got us into a contract with to buy a certain amount of power untill 2025.. company uses fossil fuel to produce Rs. 6 per unit when wapda can produce 6 Units per Rs while using hydro plants??? Anyone has details about that?
I am not sure how much are they selling each unit for at the moment, but the HUBCO and government row has been resolved. Now, the government has invited bids to plug shortage of 1000 megawatts/day for Karachi. The needs are immediate, so the hydro or nuclear option is not feasible and the government won't allow any power plants to use furnace oil. So, the companies will have to use either natural gas or coal. I think, natural gas most likely, since the Thar deposits won't be commercially available for another year or so.
I think government should not allow more than three companies for this particular project. The local defence housing society is already building a plant of 80 megawatts. Now, HUBCO should be asked to build a bigger one, perhaps 700-800 megawatts, and then one more can come in for the third one with the capacity of 300-400 megawatts.
For the pricing issue, we will have to continue to build thermal power plants along with the hydro one, to overcome immediate shortages. But, the situation will ease up, once the Thar power plants (coal fired) will be established over the next five years, with the capacity of at least 3000 megawatts. Then, you have Ghazi Barotha coming online with the capacity of around 1450 megawatts within a year, so the situation will get better over the short-term. But, we need to carryon with more investment in the hydro-power areas. Better management of hydel resources will be the main catalyst to our economic viability..
Thanks outlaw.. I remember about 3-4 years ago govt was planning another nuclear power plant for power distribution to Lahore and surrounding areas. If this is right, do you know what happened to that project? If remember correctly there was a lot of intl opposition to that!
Also is there a website where i can find Pakistan's grid?

Its Chasnupp II completion due in 2007. Chasnupp I 300MW is already connected to the grid since 2000.
yes, that's chashnupp II, but these power-plants are small and more like prototypes. We need twenty of these to make any significant contribution to the total output. I don't know any particular website that will give up-to-date information, but I follow the news regarding energy and minerals closely for various reasons. There was a thead I wrote a while back on "Vision 2025", do a search, it will give you some input on hydro power projects and then we can discuss the ones that have taken the shape of actual implementation from feasibility studies..
