Men are in a difficult conflicting position when it comes to old/childhood friends. Its not as simple as saying 'No we have other plans'. They should give you some space, yes, but spoiling your man's childhood bonds might not be the best thing to do.
Like Nik said, once they are all married they will stop 'being leeches' like you put it. For now, let the man be.
