My work is buying me a laptop…and I was given few options. They have machines from Acer and Hp. The dept acquisition manager prefers Acers cuz they are cheaper, I like Hp.
HP Compaq nc6000
CPU: P4-M 1.7
Mem: 256MB
HD: 40GB
Optical Drive: CD RW/DVD ROM
Display: 15" TFT
Battery: 5 Hrs
Weight: 2.46kg
Has WLan and Blue Tooth
Now can you ppl give me a few reasons/arguments to put forward to the person on why I want the laptop that is AUD1000 more. Maybe some dirt on the Acers etc .
To be honest - despite my own personal bias - Acer do make damned good laptops for the prices they charge - if I were looking to buy one of those two models for myself - i would take the Acer - simply because of the cheaper price. $1000.00 is a big saving considering the loss in spec is really of no real significance.
the one angle you may wish to go for though is that of warranty - Most 'big' brand manufacturers offer at least a three year warranty as standard with all machines - whilst it may not still be the case, Acer did have a habit of issuing a standard 1 year warranty ... they have to keep the costs down somehow i suppose - i would check whether this is still the case though as I'm not fully up to date with recent products.
Other than that though - I'd accept the Acer and be happy - It will do anything you need it to do - and they are well known for longevity with regard to battery life - not least because they do truly operate for 5 hours on a single charge (unlike many other manufacturers such as Dell, Toshiba, etc - these people tend to exaggerate battery life a little).
The HP may be a nicer machine with a few extra features - but as a user - I'd doubt you'd notice any real difference between the two in terms of functionality.
In your particular case in my humble opinion, if you have a choice and you mostly do software development work, go with HP/Compaq ... (I don't like HP but Compaq rocks but now Compaq is also HP) ....
I do need the WLan...cuz they have wireless up at work...and I have it at home. So theres a basic functionality diff right there...although they have pcmcia cards for older laptops. I think ill go for the Hp with the DVDRW and RAM upgrade. :o
TravelMate seems to be a generic portable motherboard...not made by acer I think.
