Re: How you address peoples in your culture?

maasi/mausi is commonly used in north india too. bengalis call their aunts maashi. calling servants maasi was a way to being nice to them/considering them family.

Re: How you address peoples in your culture?

Am I the only one who thinks "bibi" is used in a derogatory sense in Pakistan?

Re: How you address peoples in your culture?

I would think that someone might use bibi as a condescending term - but I don't see it as being derogatory. Am I missing some other connotation of bibi?

Re: How you address peoples in your culture?

it is, but sometimes only...... as subtle sexism........ funny thing, some womenz get ticked off really bad if you call them bibi........:D

they get pissed for two reasons

  1. bibi indicates a woman of older age...as in aunty'ish
  2. indicates that since you is a woman...u no understand bibi!!!

Re: How you address peoples in your culture?

I have seen it used in a dismissive way. Like how NomiCA put it, like trying to shrug them off.

lol at your disecting "bibi". Its rather a respectful way of addressing women in MY CULTURE.i dont know where you are coming from at this.

Re: How you address peoples in your culture?

I called this classmate of mine Khatoon, wouldn't do that with someone I didn't know. Sort of me trying to pick on her, but she was cool with it. I like using first names, following it with Sahab or Sahibah sounds more polite though. Sometimes I call my mom by her first name, when I'm feeling really cheery that is. "Hey S, kaisi ho?"

Re: How you address peoples in your culture?

punjabi?

but lot of my friends address each other with this term

Re: How you address peoples in your culture?

Yes its very respectful word in my culture too. like we refer to great women in Islamic history (including Umhaat ul momineen) as Bibi.
