how would you handle this ethical situation?!?!

How would you react to a situation where someone tells you that the only problem they have ever faced in their career of public health is while working in Islamic countries, where women are not supposed to leave their houses without their men, and men workers cant visit their houses to find out the number of kids missed during vaccination period.
Also, if they tell you about an incident, that a particular vaccine was needed to be given during the month of Ramadan to avoid un-healthy outcomes in near future but they didn’t want these Muslim women to walk to the health centers while fasting, and the public health workers were not allowed to visit their houses during the day when the head of the household that is husband wasn’t around, ultimately blaming that your own religion was one of the problems that they had to face while working in Nigeria or other Islamic countries..
and not to mention the taboos that you are not supposed to discuss in an Islamic coutry such as breast cancer, or HIV, etc.. what would you say in response to all these questions and how well would you handle it while providing satisfactory response in accordance to religion and keeping your career of public health in mind as well!

Re: how would you handle this ethical situation?!?!

Uhm religion does not prohibit one from getting medicine. If these ppl making excuses r so stupid that they’d rather let thier women die or get sick than let them be looked at by a man well then I dunno wat to say except that they have no one but themselves to blame when their wife/daughter/sister/mother is dead and they shall wallow in tehir own misery coz of their stupid twisted beliefs that a male doctor is not allowed to examine a woman. I know there’s the whole hayya thing and if a woman doc is available then fine, but also… docs r sposed to be gender neutral, a male doc will not examine a woman and hink “wow shes sexy, i’m touching a naked woman!” as these idiots r afraid of

Our souls are in these cases and shouldn’t we take care of these cases in order to strengthen ourselves physically, spiritually and mentally so we can make life better for those all around us? Islam is not about wallowing in misery or pain because of some extreme beliefs of hayya…

Gosh this pisses me off…

Re: how would you handle this ethical situation?!?!

I would say it's great...Segregation would allow for more women to come into the workfield to serve other women...

No one can help another woman better except another woman...Just like you wouldn't want to go to a female proctologist, similarly no Muslim woman would like to expose her breasts to a male doctor for a checkup...

Re: how would you handle this ethical situation?!?!

Ideally women shud serve women but sometimes only male docs r available and in that case why should a woamn be prohibited from being treated? Also, just because a doc is female doesn't mean she's better to her female patients than males..bottom line it's about the job they do and how they make u feel, or in most cases, whatever's available..

Re: how would you handle this ethical situation?!?!

You tell them Islam isn't the factor that is preventing them, but illiteracy and idiotic mullahs.

Re: how would you handle this ethical situation?!?!

hai Allah maine kiya pocha mujhe kiya mila!

Sara.. see public helath workers are totally different than the doctors,, doctor treats the patient where as a public health worker would monitor the community health problems and develop a policy to spread awareness about that problem thus it would be considered a preventive medicine... Thus, the males might allow their women to visit a doctor but they might not allow their women to visit health centers established for their health with the coordination of preventive medicine workers.. ever heard of how polio vaccine was challenged in 2001-2002 and even someone spread this rumor tthat this vaccine might cuase infertility among grls who will be given one in their childhood... How would some one react to this situation? I am pursuing my career in this field but honestly, I am already having hard time dealing with these ethical issues where culture and "log kiya kahain gaye" comes right before the health issues that someone would be dealing with.. I hope i got my point across!

Re: how would you handle this ethical situation?!?!

oooo arrite srry i didn't think to make a distinction, i'm not interested in pursuing medicine or anything rleated to it period. yeah i heard about the polio vaccine in nigeria.. messed up. sorry i dunno wat to tell you :(

Re: how would you handle this ethical situation?!?!

Oh in that case, you let them on their own. If they want to die, then let them.

Re: how would you handle this ethical situation?!?!

hmm as far as ramadan timimgs are concerned, that can be avoided with working in flexible hours.

Re: how would you handle this ethical situation?!?!

Who is the public health worker addressing? His bosses/organization or the populace he's working with?
