A few days ago , I met a gentleman who said he has a plan since he graduated , he is sticking by it. Upon query he told me how he made calculated decisions to jump jobs every few years to achieve a set goal of salary ..
That made me think and question is that was a wise thing to do or a risky thing to do?
What do you guys think? Also, what are some of the ways to upgrade income over the years ?
mixed bag...you dont want to look like a job hopper, yet you dont want to look stale stuck in the same role.
as long as you are learning, growing and being rewarded appropriately it is good.
One of the best ways to do this is join an 'academy' company which focuses on growth and training. Some companies have rotational programs or enough business units that you can make jumps within the organization without leaving the company and would still add to your compensation.
When I look at resumes, quick job hoppers raise a few questions...1- if you are good, how long will you be here for. 2- or did you move around each time before you were canned. Its especially relevant for sales, if someone is meeting quotas and all thy have no reason to move..except for major salary gains, going for something really growing and cool, or location needs. if any of those are not present then i wonder if the person did not deliver and then bailed before that caught up.
I have changed roles myself, and have had major gains in changing jobs, but the jumps were not just for money, it was a career growth each time in terms of role, level, area of focus etc.
