A silly question. If you want to make something like a rice pudding or custard for your 13 month old, what kind of sweetener would you use…plain white sugar, honey, apple sauce..??
I just don’t feel good about adding a few teaspoons of white sugar to whatever I am making.Seems too much..!!
Re: How to sweeten it up...
honey, banana, apple sauce. I very rarely use sugar. I used to sweeten with brown sugar, but realized that's not actually any healthier, so I gave the fruits more use.
I used pureed pear, mango, peach, apricot, etc as well. You could even try sweet potato. Or berries like blue berries and strawberries. If she's able to have diced foods, you can just chop them up and mix 'em in.
I don't think sugar is bad, but I would try something else first.
Try cinnamon too.
Re: How to sweeten it up...
I was thinking of making some rice pudding for her...you know like kheer...was thinking if I should add some fruit or honey to it.
Refined sugar just doesn't sound too healthy.I mean she will eat it for sure once she grows up and makes her own food choices, but lemme control the sugar as long as I can...:D
Re: How to sweeten it up...
Sahar gave good pointers
I for the longest time only used pureed fruit and honey... Even now sugar isnt really a part of midget's diet.
Re: How to sweeten it up...
we use honey a lot.
For kheer - what about just unsweetened rice pudding. Milk as some sweetness of it's own so you don't have to add alot
Re: How to sweeten it up...
And u know... Its us grown ups that taste food and label it as bland ..... Its for a baby... They dont know jack... My son only lear ed bout sweet and not sweet when he started to properly have our food... So before u think its not sweet ot she wont eat it... Offer some to the kid in its nautral form... If they dont eat it... Than add something to sweeten it
Though with pureed fruit... 2 birds, one stone :d
Re: How to sweeten it up...
Thanks..!!
And you guys are right that they wont know how sweet or salty something has to be.That is why my daughter has had a sugarless french toast and pancakes..:D
I made some vanilla custard and grated a fresh apple into it.
I like the idea of making unsweetened rice pudding...and maybe add some honey to slightly sweeten it up.
Re: How to sweeten it up…
Update..I made some custard for her.Added banana and apples to it and just a lil bit of honey. It actually tasted pretty good but my beloved daughter did not even taste a bite. She refused the first bite with the shake of her head and kept on saying ‘nahin..nahin’…:hinna:
And we used to love this custard with fruits thing our mom used to make.
Re: How to sweeten it up...
^ Mine stopped having things with a spoon. She just wouldn't have cereals, yogurt, custards. So annoying! But she wants things that have more of a bite and can be handled. I wonder if you dipped a piece of fruit in the custard and offered it to her for a bite, what would she do?
Or if you do what I do most times: Bring food for myself, take a few bites (while ignoring her). She comes immediately to check out what I'm enjoying. :D
Re: How to sweeten it up...
She started to show some 'interest' in foods that were given to her with a spoon, hence I thought of making custard. But mainly she wants something she can pick up herself, dissect and check what it is and then eat it...that has been the reason she hasn't eaten any rice for a few days too(they just keep flying and hardly any ends in her mouth).I used to give it to her with my hands but these days that is also not liked by her.
I do that what you said.Eat myself and seem to enjoy it but ife she has made her mind that she does not want it,she does not want it...!!
