Hi,
What’s the best way to store my wedding dress (dress, lehenga and dupatta) - it’s a lot of material and the skirt in particular is really soft and delicate.
It didn’t come with a garment bag or anything. But should I get one? A specific type - should it be breathable or waterproof? A separate bag per item or is it ok to keep the three-piece outfit in one bag?
Or should I just find a plastic box that it will fit in, and fold it up with pieces of tissue paper inbetween?
I thought I'd write what I found on the internet seeing as no one else here seems to know either..
It's better to store your dress folded up in a box, rather than hanging in a garment bag because over time this weakens the dress and can distort the shape.
It should be folded up with acid-free white tissue paper between the layers. Somewhere it also said that you can wrap your dress in a cotton bed sheet.
It should be an archive-quality box - not plastic - it needs to breathe.
At least once a year you should take your dress out of storage to air it out.
I use malmal kay dupattay to wrap my precious clothing in. They are stored folded rather than hanging for the exact reason pointed out above (maintain their shape).
