How to respond to "tell me about your weaknesses?"

Suppose you are appearing for a job interview, how would you tackle this question?

Share some good “weaknesses” that are actually “strengths in disguise”

Re: How to respond to "tell me about your weaknesses?"

Sharing some good "weakness" that is actually "strength in disguise" - I think if the interviewer is smart he/she will easily see through that.

In your professional or academic life - there must be some thing that you did - that you wouldn't do again.

I'd say share that story - and then also share the steps you have taken to fix that issue.

For example:

I once talked down to an employee in front of other employees. But then I realized that it was the wrong thing to do - and I have learnt from my mistakes. etc

Probably a little more risky - but if I was the interviewer I would appreciate the latter strategy.

Yes even the candidate should realise that the interviewer would be smart enough to gauge that it is actually the strength that is being conveyed in form of a supposed weakness. Like a friend when asked to convey her weaknesses replied that " sir what do you want me to say; I am 'impatient' for results. We had a hearty laugh but am sure the interviewer wouldnt have been impressed with such blunt behavior .

Re: How to respond to "tell me about your weaknesses?"

i was always told to make a strength a weakness, for example i am very hard on myself or that I am a hard worker I don't know when to quit.

Re: How to respond to "tell me about your weaknesses?"

I hate that 'turning strength into weakness' thing, it's preposterous and I doubt any interviewer would believe that.

Re: How to respond to “tell me about your weaknesses?”

whatever you do, DONT do this:

Re: How to respond to "tell me about your weaknesses?"

share a weakness that is very human, and how recognizing you have a tendency you keep yourself from getting impacted by it.

for example one that I use is that I sometimes tend to get really fascinated by something, personal curiosity or interest in the subject, the challenge is that I would then get into doing too much research or analysis which is really beyond what is needed and is not the most effective use of my time, to address that I note what info I need to proceed, and do checkmarks as I have done each. If I find something that is interesting i note it and move on so my checklist is complete, I may go back and investigate or look into the aspects which I found interesting but not on the critical path, in some cases they have been helpful for us understanding a situation more, and in some cases its just good anecdotal information, but recognizing that I can get carried away, I take steps to ensure it does not happen.

:hehe:

omg that was good … made my day

Re: How to respond to "tell me about your weaknesses?"

Do this...

Make thinking face.....
Then say hmmmmmmmm
then say "the area want to work/concentrate on is ...... .......... (some thing you know well.... and not key requirement of the current interview.)"

Re: How to respond to "tell me about your weaknesses?"

you should say .... "my greatest weakness is admitting that I have one" then go "hahaha" straight after ...

Re: How to respond to "tell me about your weaknesses?"

Or just be straight up and say ... I'm sorry I can't tell you my weaknesses, but I can tell you that I recognise them and I work on turning them in to strengths every day ...

And inspired by Monk's post ... you can say ...

"Actually none of my weaknesses are in the set of required and desired attributes in the job specification" then smile gingerly.

Re: How to respond to "tell me about your weaknesses?"

I think the key is to focus on a not-so-serious weakness and also explain what you are doing to fix it.

For example, if you are interviewing for a finance job you cannot say "I am not good with numbers" :DSomething like "I sometimes focus too much on the details, but make it a point to remind myself that the big picture is more important" should work better

Re: How to respond to "tell me about your weaknesses?"

This is a tested example that i used in a professional interview when asked the question of my weakness/es.

I replied, " when confronted with a situation of finding a solution during a certain process, I tend to focus too much on the problem rather than the solution. so when i take a break and go for a walk or a cigarette and come back, i find out the solution was always there infront of me but my focus was needled on the problem itself. I have taken steps to relax myself and improve my focus on the solution instead of problem and it seems to work for me now.

Hope this helps.

"go for a walk or a cigarette "...yeh thats going to go down well...

When asked this question, this is what I do:

I take a long pause and give the impression od being in deep thought. After almost a minute of silence, I reply back " My spontaneousness..."
