How to put out fires!

So I put a frying pan with some oil in the stove and while I was waiting for it to heat up, I started washing dishes. All of a sudden I smell smoke, turn around and see a big fire out of the frying pan . I quickly removed it from the hot burner, took the spoon out and dumped it under the running water in the sink…got confused about what to do with the pan, so I took it outside and dumped it on the snow on the deck. Phew!

Of course the alarm went off but I opened the windows and turned on the air purifier. Aal is vell now.

So what would be a better way to handle a fire like this and others that could happen at home?

Re: How to put out fires!

Use a lota with water :jhanda:

Jokes aside always have a small fire extinguisher in the kitchen!

blankeeeeeet

Re: How to put out fires!

**its advisable to have a "Fire Extinguisher" in ur home [fully pressurized]. u could have grabbed baking soda from ur fridge and dumped on the pan on fire or simply put anything on top of the pan to cut off the oxygen supply.

thank God u are safe. :D**

Re: How to put out fires!

I had a blank moment :(

Re: How to put out fires!

the last thing KKF said. If you would've put the pan under flowing water that can cause additional fire ... good thing u didn't do that

Re: How to put out fires!

Really???? how so?

that kinda happened to me once, I was cooking something and suddenly i saw the pan on fire..dunno how it happened..i was bout to run and get my mom but my dad happened to walk in and I think he stopped it by turning off the fire, covering hte pan with another pan and removing it from the burner.

Re: How to put out fires!

Throw some baking soda on the pan.

Any brand should work

Re: How to put out fires!

You should wet a towel and cover the pan with it.

Re: How to put out fires!

Everyone should keep at least 2 Fire Extinguishers at home where anyone can access it (even guests so it should be visible). 1 in Kitchen, other in basement.

Re: How to put out fires!

Adding water to an oil laced fire will only spread the fire? You should always try to turn off your stove or oven and you can do a few things. dump flour onto the fire or if possible find a bigger pot cover to cover the pan and smolder out the fire. (kind of like how if a person is on fire they should stop, drop, and roll because the rolling will smother out the fire eventually or why bystanders always cover the person with a giant blanket.) When a fire doesn't have oxygen it will die regardless if it's an oil fire or a regular old fire.

i've mentioned all that in my post ... the whole idea is to "cut off the suppy of oxygen that feeds the fire...cover the fire by anything, like blanket, baking soda, pan [noo too muchh bigger as i won't choke oxygen supply] or anything.**

Re: How to put out fires!

fire extinguisher!

Re: How to put out fires!

NEVER EVER user water on oil fires. Use fire blanket and starve it of oxygen. If fire blanket is not handy then use a moist (not dripping) towel. But under no circumstances try to move pan under running water or pour water in it.

REASON: Oil is less denser than water. It FLOATS in water and is flammable/fuel itself. When you pour water, burning oil simply floats on surface, this may cause splash which will spread the fire further.

I'm such a fool...this could have been big :(
