Hey girls,
I’m getting engaged in three weeks and my family’s tradition is to wear the dupatta on the head. I’m having my engagement at a hall and I’m getting ready by a mua. I have thin hair and was wondering if you all can share your experiences with what hairdressers do in that situation to make sure your dupatta stays in place. If there are accessories..please let me know. My hair dresser is not desi and she thinks I have “enough hair” but I feel like the dupatta is too heavy. I’m stuck! (And no im not gonna wear a wig lol they aren’t THAT thin either)
Re: How to make the dupatta stay on your head!
use hair pins... my parlour lady used plenty of them
Re: How to make the dupatta stay on your head!
i have thin hair but my stylist used extensions to pin the dupatta and help it stay in place because it was really heavy (wedding) - for the engagement i just pinned it in myself cuz the jora wasnt there when i got my makeup done and it stayed put for the whole evening!
Re: How to make the dupatta stay on your head!
For my engagement I had my hair done at a non desi hairdressers and whilst the dupatta stayed on my head (thanks to my cousins pinning), the hair did start to come undone. I have fairly thick hair but it wasn't enough to hold the style with the weight of the duppata. I did explain I'd have the dupatta to the hairdresswe, but I think she understood it as a veil which are no where near as heavy.
If I could do it again I'd use extensions in my style to ensure everything stayed put.
I'm not desi so my hair is definitely not as thick as most typical desi girls. My nikkah dupatta was extremely heavy (even by desi bridal standards--even my MIL, who ordered it for me, was shocked), but pins, pins, and more pins did the job without needing any extensions. Especially if someone can help you pin the dupatta strategically around the shoulder area, this will help remove some of the weight from the head and will make it less likely to slip later in the night. As long as you're not wearing the dupatta straight down without some folding and pinning, you should be OK.
Re: How to make the dupatta stay on your head!
i have quite fine hair and lost a lot of it last year so i was also worried about the same thing. i had my nikkah in pak though and went to a salon for hair. i bought some of those hair pieces just in case and gave them to the woman who was doing my hair. first she said that she probably won't use any but when she started doing my hair, she said it would be best. the one she used was that fake loose curl scrunchie kind, i didn't know what she was gonna do with it. but when she was putting my hair up, she basically folded it and put it underneath somehow.. with my hair combed over the top. after she was done, you couldn't tell at all that i had fake hair under it. i had a style that was half up/half down... gently combed back with some height and pinned at the back of my head, with the rest in loose curls.
i did my own makeup at home so had an aunty pin my duputta later and the hair was done so well, she had no problem fixing the duputta in. it didn't move at all, all night. nor did it pull my hair and give me a headache, which i was really worried about.
i would really think about getting a desi hairdresser who has experience with doing this kind of stuff. they know how to fix hair properly so that it won't get messed up or start coming undone when the duputta is on.
if you can't, maybe have a trial with your hairdresser.. show her your duputta and some pics of how people wear them, maybe she will then understand that she has to put some fake hair in to support your real hair and the duputta. see what she does and then go home and pin your duputta and see if it's comfortable and stays.. if not let her know and see what can be done.

yep!! pins pins pins! my dupatta was painfully heavy!! especially from the bottom..
my mother pinned it on the head..then at the small of my back..as well as upper back...it stayed put..

Re: How to make the dupatta stay on your head!

Re: How to make the dupatta stay on your head!

Re: How to make the dupatta stay on your head!
I was wondering if I get hair extension done...can I wash my hair? lol I know black people usually get their hair but I've heard horror stories about it.

:) yes lots of backcombing. it took me ages to get it out - lots of conditioner! i was piling it on for a good 20mins with no effect and then suddenly all the knots started coming out.
i think she did some and towards the back, and then attached the piece at the back of the head and combed all that hair over it. then she worked on the front half of the hair; backcombing and then brushing it all back, leaving the very front not backcombed so that it looked nice and smooth when it was combed back over the whole thing. if that makes sense. then the rest was loosely curled.
give her some fake hair and LOTS of pins (they just kept coming out! found a few left behind in the shower too, lol).
pinning dupattas?
How do makeup artists or hair stylists pin the dupatta so that you can't see the pins?
Re: pinning dupattas?
theres really no such way unless your duppatta is very opaque.
they keep it out of sight from the front, but from the back, they are all visible.
Re: pinning dupattas?
Your pins are very much visible but most of the time you may not notice them because they stick bobby pins into your dupatta and into your updo.
Re: pinning dupattas?
^i'm still confused...how do they stick bobby pins IN your dupatta? its not like a safety pin where they can go through the dupatta? so to make the dupatta hold, do they use safety pins or bobby pins?
they use the ends of the bobby pin to poke two small holes into the dupatta and spread the pin open under ur hair to make it hold. sounds kinda weird but i hope u got the idea
Re: pinning dupattas?
you will know exactly what they are doing when the ends of the pins poke u in the head as if u've just been stabbed. lol. it happened to me at my nikah n i thought i was bleeding the entire night.
my MUA asked me to bring hair pins and now I have no idea what to do. Hair pins mean bobby pins to me and the ones in the US (see pic below) have this thick plastic protective coating that really would make it impossible to poke holes in a dupatta.
What kind of hair pins then do you think my MUA could be referring to? Do any of you have pics so that I know what to buy? ![]()
Re: pinning dupattas?
^When I got my duppatta pinned, my MUA used those.
