I think he needs to admit he has a problem before you can do anything to help him. Its very hard with these things, you cannot help someone if they don't want to be helped. Secondly, it might be better not to mention the word mental problem. People get frightened when they hear that word and tend to react negatively in terms of getting treatment as they don't want to admit there is a problem.
