How to learn about investments/stock market?

Hi there,

I reside in Canada and I have quite a bit of savings, I would like to invest in the stock market and other investments like GIC’s, BONDS and God knows what else.

I am completely clueless about this stuff and I have an arts brain, not a mathematical, logic brain…so I will require more help than the avg person to get a grasp of this stuff.

Can you please advise me how to learn about the stock market? How did you learn? Are there any good books out there? Your help is most appreciated!

this is a good starting point:

  • if you feel like exploring stocks more, read “The Intelligent Investor” by Ben Graham. was one of the first books I read. and still my fav.
  • http://www.milliondollarjourney.com/ - this is a very, very good Canadian blog that often explains personal finance topics from the basics and does it very well.

It is too late to get into EDFs and stocks and etc. Spain is next after Greece. So quite a rough ride ahead.

Stick to gold in physical shape and sit on it.

Good luck. :)

But people tell me that you will never get more than what you paid for the gold...ie. the value goes up...but you never get the higher value when re-selling it?

Then you need to change those "people" because they are luring you to get into forex instead :)

I purchased gold at $770/ounce about two years ago. Now the gold is selling for $1,227/ounce. Go figure.

Are you talking about a block of gold or gold jewellry? You will never get a high value when re-selling gold jewellry! Please explain.

Buying property in Pakistan is also a good investment. It never goes down.

why is that? is that because Pakistan is immune to property/financial bubbles? if real estate can collapse in other countries, why can't it in Pakistan?

so, walk me through your rationale. how exactly did you figure out that gold was undervalued at 770? and what are you doing now that it is at 1227?

this is horrible, horrible advice being given to a newbie... just buy property in Pakistan because it never goes down. or just buy gold because it never goes down. this is absolutely awful advice.

it has never collapsed in Pakistan. Property bubble is only for those why buy and sell properties for short term profit, on inflated values due to high demand.
Long term investors never suffer such losses.
