Please post some tips. Thanks
Re: How to improve writing skills?
Great topic. Depends on a persons personality. Most people like structure. Prof. Chaotic I am sure will insist to see an outline first. Which is nothing but a Table of Contents. This allows you to visualize your entire document - all you got to do is fill in each section and subsection.
Others are free flowing. They like to put down thoughts ad they occur.
I would think depending on type of document one ot the other approach or a combination would work.
Above all, remember Hanuman is looking out for ya.
Re: How to improve writing skills?
^Thank you. So basically you're saying first and foremost I have to think about the points I want to highlight?
It's mainly regarding writing essays....revolving around subjects concerning sociology and international relations.
Re: How to improve writing skills?
Practice makes alot of difference. Infact why not spend just 10 minutes a day to do a quick exercise , something like decide a random topic and write something on it.
Increase of vocabulary is an absolute must and for that one must read alot to be able to write better..
Sometimes reading alone isnt enough, reading and then analyzing various writing styles , helps consciously learn how to write in a grasping manner ..
Some exercises that can genuinely help improve writing skills :
- Read a story and then write it down using your own words.
- Reproduce what you have read in two or three various writing styles , for example first style could be a narrative style , second could be detail oriented storty writing , third could be concise and to the point story telling etc ..

.
Ms. Biryani gave excellent suggestions. Some comments above.
Re: How to improve writing skills?
Here is a sample outline on International Relations.
I) Abstract ( about 6-8 sentences that captures essence of whole document
II) Background About 2 paragraphs on what others have done in this area
III) Your ideas. One para on how u plan to address this. Then talk abt various regions and their issues
III-1) middle east
III-2) SOUTH ASIA
III-3) West
IV) your suggested solutions
V) conclusions
I am sure u can come up with better section titles.

Hareem, If you are about to write an essay, the basic step is what Southie recommended, think of a structure so you are clear how much information goes into which part of the essay.
Next jot down all the information you want to put in , in bullet points and then arrange them in an order that seems best to you, in terms of flow.
Then remove the bullets and simply formulate concise sentences adding a bit more information as required.
This is the simplest way to achieve a very structured essay.
Or what you can also do is write up all the information as and how you want it , just keep writing. when finished, break it down into points and fit them in a structure. I find this the harder method coz you get really bored doing this .. but the first technique mentioned above really helps with information based essays .. .

Hareem
You do write well. And I also like your irreverant style - of course that cant e used in Sociology etc.
Best way to get started sometimes is to just get started. Know that your first draft will be crap. But the tough part would be out of the way.
Blogging is a good way to practise writing. But blogging is sometimes just random thoughts. Maybe you can blog on some topics of interest. Get the writer 's rust out of the way.
Or you could always accept the Senior Contributor position for our Financial Nuggets Dept.
Re: How to improve writing skills?
Hareem since you read books,it shouldn't be hard for you. This is what I do when it comes to writing essays, stories etc.
- Make a mind map/plan on a paper. You can put bullet points in a spider diagram. Later pick each point one by one and get your essay written well structured.
-Pick a topic and start writing..Introduction-->Main body-->Conclusion.
- The use of language should be correct e.g grammar, vocabulary and punctuation.
-You can use academic devices such as Similes, metaphors, repetition, rhetorical questions, formal/informal language, first person/second person etc.
-Start writing a diary ,it can be helpful as well.
Re: How to improve writing skills?
Don't know what a spider map is. Must be the generation gap.

Re: How to improve writing skills?
Personally (though i am faaar faaar from being any sort of writer) I think u should start on free style genre.
A crowdy place really helps (like a cafe or a restaurant). The more u get distracted at first, and a few more times, the better ur brains focuses later. Free style helps you to take anything, any topic under ur wings and write as much material on it as u can.
Clearly in the first few attempts u r distracted as hell. As u try harder u see some mumbo jumbo scattered on ur paper, and it all looks nonsense at first.
But eventually, they start to gain more sense. And as u said u read a lot... it helps as u carry on. Free style genre helps u to write on anything, thus making ur own wardrobe larger as u go on.
Re: How to improve writing skills?
^ interesting.
I don't follow one approach. In some cases I would write bullets, have sections for a flow and then fill in
In other cases I write free flow, it depends on mood, topic and type of document.
