well this sometimes doesn’t work with every mother in law, it’s my personal experience, when I got married I didn’t even know how to boil rice like I didn’t know how much water should be added in the pot, my MIL cooked them infront of me, next time when I started pouring water in the pot exactly with the quantity she told me before but you know she came and said “nahi ye pani kam daala hai aur daalo” as a result rice became extremely soft (like halwa) Sigh* now I don’t ask her to guide me I just make a phone call to my mother and then I cook. Now my husband consider me a great cook shuker hai. My MIL doesn’t appreciate me but I don’t mind. my huuby is happy with my cooking skills that’s my achievement. I do admire her and her abilities but now I don’t expect any kind of admiration from her side. I believe that you should make yourself fair no matter what others do to you.

If MIL wants to teach you something, I dont think its a big deal. In fact, its kind of nice to have someone teach you a different method of cooking. You learn ideas and can get a little creative.

If she nitpicks when you cook, that is not very nice of her. In which case, I would simply say “jitna paani apko dalna hai ammi khud hi daldein…mein kharab na kardoon”.
