How to help a kid

develop better communication skills?

Some very good points were presented in Milly’s thread and it got me thinking how determine if your kid has good social skills and how to make them better at it?

Re: How to help a kid

  1. At home, you want them to engage them in conversation as much as possible. Let them have a diverse group of friends so they feel comfortable around everyone not just "their type."
  2. Kids have their own personalities too. My older one is a social butterfly while the choti likes to keep to herself for the most part. However, you as a parent need to help develop their personalities by helping them overcome any fears they may have, and I think the best way to encourage them is to involve them in activities with other kids, in teams, etc.

Nice advice.

Re: How to help a kid

  1. children should be encourage to speak openly and honestly
  2. give them scenarios to talk through so they are prepared for situations- if you saw your friend being bullied, what would do? what would you say?
  3. I always tell my girls that there is a NICE way of saying things and there is a NOT SO NICE way of saying things. In this house, we use the NICE way.

Re: How to help a kid

  1. Allow them to participate in events where they get to "perform" in front of an audience. (Note how in my earlier post I jumped from point 1 to 3 :D).
  2. Introduce them to a variety of books so they develop a good vocabulary and general knowledge on different topics. Then discuss the book so you can judge their comprehension.

Re: How to help a kid

reading and verbal comprehension is critical.

It's not enough that the child reads at the grade level but also what they are getting out of it. It's important to ask what they have read and what are their thoughts about it. It facilitates discussion and improves communications skills.

Re: How to help a kid

another important thing DO NOT LOSE YOUR TEMPER when they tell u something u do not like. Next time they wont speak up. Speak to them in polite manner so they are always looking to communicate things...

2ndly not all kids have same nature. some communicate more some less. Do not try to compare kids communication.

Finally, only way to improve their communication is is to communicate with them (how helpful :) )
