What is the proper way to dispose of books, magazines or calendars that have a Quranic ayat or Allah’s name printed on it? We’re in the process of packing to shift houses, and I have stacks of various papers (kids masjid school tests/handouts, old textbooks or Islamic coloring books where the binding has fallen apart), Ramadan calendars and other printed materials of the sort. I can’t just put in the recycling bin. What is the proper protocol?
(Didn’t know where to post this…mods please move if necessary)
how to dispose of prints/publications that have quranic ayats or Allah’s name
Teggy Bhai, the books are all coming apart at the bindings…pages falling out. And they are mainly workbooks, so the pages are all written on and marked over or colored on. Is there any edict about proper handling of such papers? My husband said he thought he heard that a other masjid in our city (that we don’t ever really go to) has a bin where they collect such things, but I’m not sure. We may have to go check and see.

And the office/school admin room in our masjid where we attend is already full of stuff people just drop off…I’d hate to add to the clutter of there is a way I can handle/dispose of these times myself
Re: how to dispose of prints/publications that have quranic ayats or Allah’s name
unless its full kuran or a para.. put it in with other paper in recycle bin, or in a transparent bag along with other full or shredded paper, so it wont fly all over.
If you can’t stop worrying say that when you do it “sin upon monk” “sin upon monk”
like that.
BTW what better use it can serve then become paper again, saving some trees ??
Remember prophet said “he who plant two tree goes to heaven.” I guess he who save 2 tree would get me rewards too.

^^
Lol. You have surely devised quite a scheme to earn sawaab. If it’s saving tree, brotha Monk goes to Jannah for helping save trees. And if it’s a despicable act, then Quran says “None shall bear the burden of others.” :hehe:
Or, Add it to the infamous pile, and donate to the masjid generously in hope that eventually the funds may be used to dispose of the pile properly, and you would have lent a hand in doing so.
Re: how to dispose of prints/publications that have quranic ayats or Allah’s name
there are two different motives for doing so. if you do it to disrespect the Qur’aan then of course it’s a sin as well as cause for rioting but if you do it for the sake of disposing off the material with respect, it’s ok…how else would you do it?
i remember we used to do this in my village with the torn/unreadable sipaaraas [which is part of the Qur’aan] every year. if it wasn’t the acceptable way to dispose off Qur’aanic pages, i’m sure we wouldn’t have been doing this.
Re: how to dispose of prints/publications that have quranic ayats or Allah’s name
generally, the preferred method is bahaaying it in flowing water… but I assume you can use a shredder to shred it before you do that …in fact I would think that if you shred it, there wouldnt be any harm in giving it for recycling either but Im not sure of that…im just sure of the bahaaying it paani thing
Re: how to dispose of prints/publications that have quranic ayats or Allah’s name
This reminds me of an unfortunately too true case from Pakistan a few years ago.
A student at a madrassah found that a Quran in the madrassah was falling apart because the glue in the binding had worn out. He asked a teacher how to dispose of it, and was told that there was an old well nearby that such pages were placed in when they needed to be respectably disposed.
The student went to the well and to his horror discovered that not only was the well nearly filled up, but that it was filled up close enough to the top that the wind was plucking out pages and throwing them and dragging them around the ground!
The boy carefully picked up all the pages from the ground, took them and his original falling apart Quran back to the teacher, and explained what happened. The teacher told him that since the well was filled up, it would be preferable and permissible to burn the pages to make sure they were never defiled.
The boy went outside and began carefully burning the pages. Somebody else saw him do this, and a mob quickly formed which surrounded and severely beat the boy.
He was then handed over to police who charged him with committing blasphemy.
