How to design your dresses yourself?

Hi everyone. I’m new here. I find this forum great because it has answers to almost all of my questions. I design my own clothes getting ideas by browsing the net, but I still don’t feel satisfied. Therefore, I would like to know how I can improve my dresses through your suggestions. Especially when it comes to party dresses or semi-party dresses I get really confused how should I get it made. What will suit it the best. The problem is I don’t have a good friend here that can give me suggestions and my husband is never interested. So what exactly should I do to improve…maybe like buy a good fashion magazine…but which one would you suggest?

Re: How to design your dresses yourself?

Experiment a little instead of copying designs. Not all the experiments are going to result in a success though but when any of them does, that's when you will feel satisfied. First step is to learn some basics of the designing, you can do that by reviewing youtube video tutorials. And I don't mean designing of Pakistani/Indian style dresses, I mean different western cuts as well. When you learn those, then a typical experiment that might give you a good result is having a western cut with an eastern pattern embroidery. Make sure to include at least half sleeves even if the tutorial doesn't have any or cover the back etc.

When experimenting, always try with some cheap fabric so you don't regret spending too much money on something that you might or might not wear.
