how to create 2nd partition on an active HD?

basically i want to partition C-drive. currently its single partition of 80GB with OS+programs installed on it with 60GB free. i want to make another partition of 40+GB out of it without affecting the OS+installed programs. i’ve done this in the past but don’t know the name of the software i used. can you recommend a good but free software to partition the active HD and should i make it a **logical **or **extended **partition? i think extended should be ok but not sure. :-/ i’ll be using this partition to store data only.

Partition Magic allows you to shrink or resize existing partitions. You can create new partition in the remaining space that it freezes up.
