How to combat dehydration during Ramadan?

Please advise… I find a lot of my friends including myself suffer from this immensely. I tend to drink a few glasses of water at iftar have my meal and then sleep after Isha in order to wake up for sehari. Its very difficult drinking water at sehari time and then I find I’m very thirsty during the day. My friends have the same problem.

Secondly, does anyone have any tips/advice from how our elders used to cope during the long summer fasts? I mean ramadan will be in the summer within the next few years.

Reference: High fiber foods

One of the practical ways in which you can have the water digest slowly leaving a feeling of full stomach is to add fiber to it, which will leave you less thirsty. Try it as you are doing sehri. The recommended fiber for women is between 20-25 grams/day. The eating habits do change significantly during Ramadan and it gets hard to cope with the changes.

If you put your mind on fasting and reading Quran as you start to feel thirsty, you will realize how quickly this feeling goes away when you start to read.

^Excellent advice.

Also, drink plenty of fluids at the beginning of and end of fast each day to make up for the absence of fluids throughout the day, it will serve to replenish your body.

That's right, and don't eat very salty food at sehri as you'd feel more thirsty then.

Lol, during ramadan I consider my eating habits to be very healthy! I make extra effort to eat fruit at iftar and avoid fried/chat patay foods as much as possible. For sehri I only have cereal as its easy/convenient!

I think my problems stem from the fact that I do not stay awake during the night to drink fluids...... I tend to sleep straight after Isha. To be fair you can only consume certain amount of fluids at iftar and still have enough room for food!

Thanks for advice IA will try and see what happens!

Re: How to combat dehydration during Ramadan?

try having some kind of juice, orange, apple or anything that u persnally like. I find that having that with water actually curbs the thirst..

Re: How to combat dehydration during Ramadan?

The point of fasting is to make us realize the importance of bounties of Allah. Feeling hungry or feeling thirsty is normal , no matter how much you eat or drink you cannot stuff yourself to the point where you will not feel hunger or thirst till the iftaar time. If it happens then what is the point of fasting ?
If you are not at the point of fainting because of dehydration then it is all OK , just tough it out , there is no remedy for it.

Re: How to combat dehydration during Ramadan?

It is natural to some extent as in dry lips and throat but if it is severe as in problem urinating then try taking lots of fruits, milk, yoghurt, juices after Iftar or during Sehar. That would keep your body hydrated through out the day. Reduce / cut your intake of tea / coffee, chocolates.
