**So now that I’m moving back home I want to get wifi for the house. But I’m so lost in all my research on which router would be best suitable for us.
Things to keep in mind:

The house is huge so not sure if it will reach all bedrooms/ kitchens/ living rooms.
One desktop computer has to be directly connected to DSL ( my dad doesn’t want to use his laptop), SO can we still have WIFI

Tomorrow I will talk to someone at bestbuy or walmart, but before that I would like to have an idea of what is the perfect price range and ****frequency for our family. I don’t want to get something too slow or too strong!
Is it DSL or cable? I know you wrote DSL just making sure!!
If it is DSL then it would be normal to connect the the router to the DSL line and yes “normally” you can connect 4 wired connection to the router (as it may have 4 LAN ports).
Wireless has nothing to do with the wired connection and will not interrupt with it generally, so you can use it without any problem.
Which one can be better, it depends which kind of wireless card you have got in your laptop or PC (maybe). If it is have Wireless-N along with other standards then you should buy a router having N capability. Remember some router has N and N1, although they are in the same standard but better to buy N1 (or also N, depending upon router), as it will offer max 300 mbit/s transfer rate.
Else if you say the house is Big then there can be many things that can be done. Using Repeater, using Power Bridge and “then” using a router as Access Point.
Sheeda-Do you mean wrapping the router with duct tape? Will definitely try that out!
Aaho- I guess I’m a little confused on my preferences too :/. But the main thing is I need it for general surfing and it needs to have a strong wireless range.
Two more things, which company do you recommend, Cisco Linksys? And how do you know it will have a good wireless range?
Go with Cisco Linksys. They make the big huge professional networking products - so they know what they are doing.
Minimum you need is “G” speed. If price difference isn’t all that bad then get the “N” speed, but generally G speed is enough for everything wifi - including to share between computers etc (Internet uses extremely low capacity of total bandwidth of “G” network)
I THink $35 for Linksys Wireless-N Broadband Router WRT160N Wireless router is still cheap for Wireless N.. if she cant spend “a lot” Although I told it before that Linksys Dual-Band Wireless-N Gigabit Router WRT320N will be enough for her as it wont also cost much ~ $73
no advantage in getting an “n” router if all your laptops are not “n” enabled. you just pay more for same operation modes as a “g” router.
the router you get will not determine the range of operation in your vast home. your laptop can almost certainly “hear” your router. but your laptop’s wifi card will not usually be good enough for the router to “hear” it at larger distances.
in other words, just by a good “g” router. a linksys WRT54GS gets my thumbs up.
