How to choose makeup that compliments your outfit

I wanted to start this thread for a very long time..i want to know how to choose liptick/blush /eyemakeup with different colored dresses:

For example
My Skintone: warm undertone, NC 35 .
Eyes:brown
Hair: very dark borwn
Color of the dress: pink and sky blue with some gold and silver kaam .pink is predominant color.

1-How should be the makeup?
2-Which colors suits well with what?
3- peach/coral lipstick/blush goes well with what? Likewise with pinks/reds and nude
4-what to avoid?
5-when to choose dewy look? And when matte look?

GS makeup gurus please teach me/us..How to choose makeup look that can compliment each other ( MU and outfit) to bring out our features more.

Reha/M can u make it a sticky :flowers:

Re: How to choose makeup that compliments your outfit

Personally, I would keep it simple.

Something like this: Pink for Pink | I Am Nymphette or <3: soft brown.](http://geneplusyan2.blogspot.co.uk/2008/11/soft-brown.html)

For matte and dewy… I think that if you are doing heavy eyes or prominent lips, the makeup should be as matte as possible. For example, the red lips with nude eyes+winged liner… imo the base needs to be even and matte. You can add highlighter where necessary but the skin shouldn’t be dewy (generally).

I think dewy skin looks best when the makeup is minimal… think simple summer looks with bronzer, lipgloss and simple liner+mascara.

Re: How to choose makeup that compliments your outfit

i always get stuck when it comes to light pink suits.. what lip colour are you supposed to wear? i know lighter eye makeup looks better with light pink.. but i have a formal light pink suit (something you'd wear to a wedding) and i feel that if i do a light look, it won't really stand out. any suggestions? :)

Re: How to choose makeup that compliments your outfit

thanks stopps,
for eg: i have a yellow and green outfit(semi formal) with some kaam of pearls and silver (yellow is a predominant color)how about pairing red lips, nude winged eyeliner and dewy skin??? with this outfit.

Re: How to choose makeup that compliments your outfit

It totally depends on your features. Small face, round face, big face, big nose, small nose, big eyes, almond shaped eyes, smaller eyes, high cheekbones, no cheekbones, etc.

What do you like about yourself? Everyone has certain features they like or are special about them.

I will say…I love contouring. I think it completely finishes the look of someone…even a little bit of it makes a difference.

Re: How to choose makeup that compliments your outfit

Hey apple! Okay, so first and foremost, what event is this for? Whether or not i'm going to a formal event makes the biggest difference in how I do my makeup. If you're going to a birthday party at someone's house, or a dinner somewhere then you can do a smoked out eyeliner or winged eyeliner and call it a day. Adding eyeshadow sometimes just isn't necessary IMO. If you're going to a formal event, which I think you might be since you mentioned your dress having gold and silver kaam, then sometimes you want to doll up a little more than normal. What I do when I have a dress that has funky colors is that I look for the color that is the most WEARABLE in the dress. You have pink in your dress which is great, you can do pink lips, glossy, satin, matte, whatever you prefer! For eyes, I personally wouldn't do a pink/blue/gold/silver eye as that would be too matchy matchy. I would probably do a light wash of silver and gold with some dramatic eyeliner and that's it. As much as I love metallic pigments, stay away from those because you don't want a very opaque and super shiney gold or silver on your lid, just something light.

If this is a formal event, it'll probably be in the evening time in which case you'll probably want to keep your face matte. Dewy skin looks good during the day time. I personally prefer matte skin all the time, and for those who like it, they can add some dewyness or some areas with a highlighter.

P.S. i'll try looking for eye makeup looks you can get ideas from

Re: How to choose makeup that compliments your outfit

Apple here's a very basic guideline:

If you are wearing white, pink, purple, blue, grey then pink blush/cheeks look really pretty and pink lips as well.
If you are wearing brown, beige, green, orange, yellow then browns (lips and cheeks) look really nice.

If you are doing heavy eye-makeup you should stick to nudes/neutral lipstick and if you are keeping your eyes light, then you could carry-off bold lips.

Depending on the occassion, you should do your eye-makeup. You don't need to match your eye-shadow to your outfit and can select a neutral color to 'wash' your eye-lid with and add a little bit of the same color to your under-eye area (color of your outfit).

Adding a little shimmer on your inner corner, tear duct gives the appearance of large and more 'wide awake' eyes, so does lining your waterline with a white eye-pencil. I, however, prefer kohl in mine.

Dewy make-up looks great during the day and for events where the lights are yellow as well as pictures. You could get the 'dewy' look by applying a shimmer powder/cream right above the apples of your cheeks.

Superstar I wore red lippy once with a plum outfit! It looked good!

Re: How to choose makeup that compliments your outfit

plum outfit: i'd say go for defined eyes, peachy blush and either nude lipgloss or pale pink. plum lipstick & that same shade on the outfit with jewelry hair etc can easily look overdone.

Re: How to choose makeup that compliments your outfit

What about a white outfit with dark purple velver borders, splash of fushia banarsi border on the damaan and silver kaam? Would red lips work since its all white and silver at the top? the only colour is at the bottom of the outfit. or should i do plum lips of some sort? i always have trouble with white and silver...

Re: How to choose makeup that compliments your outfit

i guess red will look nice ... is it formal or semi formal dress??
go with bold lips if the dress is light in kaam or no kaam or do a puple smoky eye with pink nude lipstick
