I think you can never become a business man unless you have the ability to see for yourself what product or service will give you good business opportunities. So as a starting point I suggest you spend some time going into the markets and talking to different businesses about how they are running their business. Observe their sales techniques , their products /services , research online as well to get indepth knowhow of how things are done.
you will then start getting ideas and you can jot them down , start shortlisting ideas and keep researching on multiple lines of interest.
Eventually you will see a picture forming and that will truly tell you if you should be investing money and if yes , then how much.

OP, the short comment is Yes, you can have a business without a 'major' investment of your own! But you'll need some for sure. It may or my not be yours. These days crowdfunding and other concepts are so common that can help you a lot. You can pitch your idea to the valued investors and win their confidence but remember nobody is that stupid. They'll evaluate you and your ideas thoroughly so make sure you make it worthit.
In the end it all comes to you, your idea and the presentation. If you have it, you can do it!

Pick an industry you are familiar with, spend minimum required to validate a genuine customer need and gradually scale your business whilst keeping costs down.
The important part is to validate genuine need. If you are like me I would rather not spend any money until I can validate the idea. Or spend the bare minimum to get the proof I am looking for.

Firstly, I wouldn't confuse a businessman with an entrepreneur there is a clear distinction. If you wish to set up a business there is no right/wrong way. You need to understand what the customer needs and why they need it. If you're purely after maximising profits to make a quick buck then you're walking a thin line but there are ways to do this however as you can imagine come with higher risk/exposure.
I would suggest you think about what you can offer that will truly benefit the consumer. Once you have an idea be it a good or service that is when you start a business plan.
You mentioned you didn't want to invest any money and that generally poses an issue as you may need to spend money if you wish to sell a good. Now, if you provide a service then maybe you could get away with this? Do you have any skills that you can sell?
