I love to have guests when its planned, when we have a little notice that they will be coming and have a good idea how long they'll stay. WHen thats the case, I love to make a "fussy" salad - cut all the veggies in nice shapes and make it look beautiful. Nice dinners with all the trimmings. Fruit and tea and then a really nice cake after dinner. Extra touches like pretty towels and soaps for the bath. Nice breakfasts with eggs and cheese and bread and meat. And enough preparation done before-hand that I can sit and chat instead of running around like a nut. Un-invited or surprise guests - in a house with 3 young banshee boyz and a 70-hour-workweek hubby do NOT get those amenities lol!

Re: how to be a good host and hostess?

one does not have to be very rich to be a good host or hostess.
an open heart and a genuine welcome smile is essential though.

Re: how to be a good host and hostess?

a host is only as good as their guest.

Re: how to be a good host and hostess?

makes sense, there, i agree.
sometimes, a guest can be too demanding. & it does require all the patience in the world to carry oneself's anger or disappointment.

Re: how to be a good host and hostess?

I guess it depends who you are dealing with… if your guests are a bit shallow and ONLY notice the number of dishes you feed 'em, then any other sincerity from the host will go un-noticed.

I know this lady, she went to her neighbours house at lunch time (unannounced), they were having lunch so they asked 'em to join in and have what they were having, that being daal. This lady felt insulted! like “yeh koi tareeqa hai, hum mehmaan haiN” blah blah blah… then she just blamed their host’s “rudeness” on their ethnicity

whereas you meet people who really take you into account… like we go to our family friend’s place and they always have at least 1 dish made from potato (coz my sis likes 'em so much)… its these little things that matter.

wel said, Pinks. little things do matter, being less fussy and more like a family that understands that everything the host/ess is doing is to the best of their ability.
and be thankful for that welcome. also, for the host/ess to be reasonably generous and kind.
