So how exactly is this done? What steps can you take to ensure the family is who they say they are? I know nothing is guaranteed. I also think it’s awful that we have to do this in this day and age instead of just and taking a person’s word but better safe than sorry, I guess.

inquire from his friends, relatives. if possible, hire a private investigator. ask for documentary proofs of his income, assets. contact marriage registry offices and local divorce courts to find out if he has ever been married/divorced.

Look at their LinkedIn profile.
Verify any professional certifications on the national websites...this will also help verify education if they need to have XYZ before they get a cert.
Talk to their friends, family, etc.
Marriages and divorces are public record in the US. So you can always check there to find out about prior marriages.
I would probably stay away from FB. Its not really the best way to judge someone in my opinion. But curiosity usually gets the better of us and we end up going that route any way so whatever you do - just be careful.
