Re: How people turned multilingual?
I think you are in disadvantage if you didn't learn Kashmiri as your saas might know Punjabi and she can do your burai in Kashmiri with her son :p
That she does :)
As I told her "See I know you hate me from day one, but you can't do anything about it, so I don't care and give **** about kashmiri :D"

My mother in law is good in learning languages, you start talking to her in Urdu and she will pick up your accent and reply accordingly. You'll feel that she is mocking you. :D
Re: How people turned multilingual?
Now I know you will never bring her in online company with me, thinking, yeh apne ghar ki mahabharat mere ghar tak leaayegi ![]()

I think being Punjabi, learning Kashmiri would not have been a big issue for you.

I've seen Baloch people easily picking Sindhi. During our visit to Quetta, one of my uncle's friend kept speaking in Sindhi with all of us and we thought that he is a Sindhi till we went to his home and met his family members. The situation with Sindhi speaking people is different, they can speak Punajbi, Saraiki, but Balochi is tough for them

Punjabi and Dogri are same, Kashmiri is too different with different in every way. We and Dogras share similar landscape also. Secondly, Kashmiri cannot distinguish between ba and bha, gaa and ghaa, so Bharat becomes Barat and ghadi becomes gadi. My Yaara sometimes makes this mistakes too :)

strange. Kashmiri origin people (Butt, etc) don't make these mistakes in Pakistan. May be with the passage of time and interaction with people here (mostly Punjabis), they rectified their pronunciation

I have not seen my father in law but he was punjabi, mother in law a Baloch. Would have been interesting seeing them converse. Anyways many Baloch do have links with Sindh, same is the case here they spent quite a few years there. Mother in law otherwise is not educated but is good in learning languages.

Pahari spoken in Azad Kashmir is similar to Punjab, dogri of Jammu is also similar. Kashmiri language of the valley is different.

It takes just a generation for this, I don't speak either hindi or english with Punjabi accent. No one get from my hindi that I have Punjabi inheritance, One bengali lady, who used to live in our block was very proud that her daughter speaks unaccented Hindi :)

Because that region is actually Punjab extension, its actually part of Jammu, Valley is still with India :)

I believe Kashmiri and gilgiti languages have resemblance. Anyways when I was a kid I could see the mountains of Jammu from my town which is near Sialkot.
Re: How people turned multilingual?
japanese like most others learn english in school.
there are actually a few (2'ish) languages in the japanese language family/japonic and you also have.the. nearly.extinct/endangered people/culture. indigenous to japan. (Ainu)
Theyve been trying to push for uniformity though for a long time so there is a faiir amount of homogeny
