My son is 2, he can write few letters… D, V, T. I did not explicitly teach him writing, he just picked it from watching/observing me. Alhamdulilah. MashAllah.
Being a preschool teacher, I have observed it varies from child to child. I have had children who where holding pencil and writing letters when they started as 3s and I also had children who came not knowing how to hold a pencil. Before I could teach them to write, I had to help them develop their pincer grip through different activities.
However, by the time they were turning 4, pretty much everyone knew how to hold a pencil and they were creating/making some sort of shapes, letters and numbers form. Many of them were able to either write or trace their name, letters, and numbers.

Lusi how do you encourage development of pincer grip?
My elder one was 3.5 and could do it. Younger can write few alphabets and numbers 1-20 . He is 4yo but still cant write his name. Not his fault but ours…for choosing a longgg and a diffucult name

My daughter’s name has “S” in it and for quite a while she just used to skip it altogether.Then she developed some kind of fondness for the letter “B” and wanted to write that instead of the S…:D.She has got it right now finally!

my neice learned to write 'S" by making a cat’s tail for the top half and another tail for the lower half of the letter ‘S’…lolz.
she could write some of the letters and number when she was like 2 years old.

Puzzles with knobs…show them how to grip/hold the knob and take the piece out instead dumping the puzzle on the floor and putting it back the same way.
Lacing activities… Start with shoe laces and beads with big holes or pasta with with holes.
Spooning activitie…give them bucket of grains, sand, beans, pasta, rice (whatever), some containers and different kinds of spoons to transfer grains from one container to another. Show them how to hold the hold the spoon.
Self feeding…give them a spoon and fork, let them feed themselves. Demonstrate with your spoon/fork and food.
Thick crayons…give them blank paper, color with.
Side walk chalk…play with side walk chalk…they love it and it is a great tool to help develop/prepare their hand for writing.
Tweezers and tong activities… Transferring pom poms or other small objects using tweezers tongs. I love getting Indian corn in fall and let the kids pluck the corn off the cob using a tweezers. Make sure it is a good heavy tweezer.

4.5 - basically when writing was introduced to her.
i learnt to write at 2.5 and my writing still looks like i’m 2.5.

Oh my god.
So shamed.
My daughrt will start school now Inshallah she will be 4 next.month and although very.clever and say the alphabet and numbers.she cannot write then yet. My own fault as we kept going uk and back ans forth and she hasn’t been.nursery yet. I feel.sick now that I havent done my best as I should have
She can say everything including kalma etc have shown her how to write numbers.etc.but she still doesn’t know

^ start her school asap. May be you may succeed to get her enrolled somewhere but most of the schools (good schools) take admissions in 1st half of the year and start session by August.
Get some books for her to practice numbers. Get some CDs for Phonics (letters sounds) and make her watch that.

First make her learn to write letters then make her write her name.

Nadz no reason to feel ashamed. I feel we start our kids on the rat race way too early. She is still very young. She will learn really quickly.

It’s honestly no big deal if she can’t write yet. She’ll pick up super fast once school starts, she’s only 4!
We’re always so concerned about our kids not walking yet, not talking yet, not writing yet and so on … as hmmna said, let’s not make it a rat race 
Remember that every child is different and learn things at different paces. No shame in that!

No need to stress, just work with her and she will pick pick in no time.

My son was a little younger than 3 when he started writing his name and daughter wrote it when she was around 3.5 She complains though that its all our mistake that son has short name (4 char) and her name is long (8 char).
Each kid is different and they learn at their own pace and there is no proof that kids who can write their name early are more intelligent than kids who dont. No need to worry. Let kid be kid

Ok, learning to write their own name is a skill that is taught when kids are 4 years old. Yes, some people learn it very early but that is the exception not the norm. Please try to send your daughter to a Montessori where the style of learning is different from run of the mill pre schools in Pakistan. Your daughter is just fine. No, need to be ashamed.
