I am confused! I remember reading in books and hearing elders that Ali (R) was just a boy when prophet mohammad (pbuh) was 40 at the time of his BAyaasaes(Prophet hood declaration). and first work done by prophet mohammed was to remove the idols from khanaei kaaba. and at that time he took ali with him and asked him to climb his shoulder and put all the idols down. This is what and how he wanted to do. He never wanted to show miracle.
please let me know where I have gone wrong?

It was after the Conquest of Mecca by muslims, some 20 years after prophet started preaching Islam. At that time prophet Muhammad broke the idols in Khana kaaba

but i have read one hadith in a book that stated that the prophet also broke some idols while he was in makkah before hijrah, and he SAW and ali RA ran away after the event to hide.
it was in the book millat ibrahim by abu muhammad al maqdisi. i will dig in and qoute it inshaallah

the author explains the authenticity of this hadith. since the book is in PDF and i dont know how to rip text from it, i cant qoute the entire discussion about its authenticity as it is long.
but its chain is as follows
in Musnad Ahmed ( vol. 1/84)
Abdulllah said my father narrated to me, Asbat bin Muhammad narrated to us, Na'im bin Hakim Al Madaini narrated to us from Abi Mariyam from Ali may allah be pleased with him...
now after the hadith ,the shaykh describes how the hadith is sound.
Asbat bin Muhammad is trustworthy and he has only been declared weak concerning narrating from Ath-Thawri, and in this case he did not narrate from him
And Naim bin Hakim al Madaini was declared trustworthy by Yahyah bin Main and Al Jali
it is just a small qoute from the book. the discussion about this hadith goes on for 2-3 pages.

at an initial glance the problem with this chain is the narrator Abu Maryam… his name is Qays al Madaini Abu Maryam al Thaqafi
Hafiz Ibn Hajr said he is “majhul [unknown]” (al Taqrib, 8359) and al Daraqutni described him as “unknown, abandoned” (Su’ilat al Burqani, 587)
but if the book’s discussion continues for 2-3 pages there’s probably more to it than this
