I have shirts hanging and pants folded in my closed that are relatively new, and I have not wore them even once in last 2 years. I am sure you all have come across such scenario. So how do you take care of that. Do you just throw it away? Donation really does not work all the times but even then, what else are the options.
Plus, when you start throwing, are you fearless or hesitant? Are you like, I dont care if I am left with two pairs of jeans and 3 t-shirts but I will get rid of everything I dont need, new or old - or are you like, I am not going to discard more than 4 items at a time?
ummm I ahve a hard time throwing away stuff. Mostly cz I almost always remember the story behind wheN I bought something–where I got it from, how much it cost, what I was feeling that day.
When it comes to clothes, even I have this hoarder mentality. I am always like … ok ok so this jeans is ripped, but I can still wear it as work jeans when I am doiing small household projects or fixing my car. I mean every jeans/pant/shirt could find a justfication. Even my old tube socks, I like to keep them around so I can wear them in hands when I am buffing my car
I hate having stuff hang around which I will not wear or never get to because I like the stuff before that.
its an ongoing process, mostly at season change though.
multiple reasons
practically, I hate clutter, and keeping things streamlined..or attempting to helps
altruistically, someone else can use that stuff today
selfishly, gives me more room for stuff i really want and will use than stuff just taking up space
I would like to think that I don't hang on to things I don't need. I do the clean out on need basis. So if I see a whole lot of shoes that I don't wear or need.. it staright away goes to my sister.. she is pretty much my thrift store. But I do have a lot of stuff that probably won't fit her (she is a lot smaller), I try to throw it away ... on need basis.. not any particular time.
I do it at the end of every season while putting away stuff of that season. If I didn't wear it the whole season, it goes. Along with other benefits, as X2 mentioned, it leaves me with less stuff to store.
I have 3 basket full of clothes and all the wardrobes are full … thanks to him
I think my kids have too many clothes and i really need to sort out what to give to charity and what to keep
as i need the space in my dressing/makeup room to be … i cannot wait to get started on that
I have hard time throwing old cloths. I have to hear a lot from my wife on this. Basically same thinking
I can still wear it doing gardening, detailing the car or whatever.
and then there are some that I absolutely love (for fitting or otherwise) that I do not want to throw out.
then there are some that I have in the closet on the assumption that I’ll wear it when I’ll reduce my waist by an inch
This summer I am seriously thinking of cleaning up the closet dil per pather rakh ker. Well actually she has warned me that If I dont, she will and in that case I’ll have no right to complain either.
Oh I don't like keeping things especially unnecessary clothes I mostly give to heartily without thinking twice when I know this thing will not be used I immediately discard it
Oh I don't like keeping things especially unnecessary clothes I mostly give to heartily without thinking twice **when I know this thing will not be used **I immediately discard it
I always know that kabhi na kabhi there will be a use :D
Once during spring, this year I did it at least twice this year. I don't throw clothes unless they are unwearable. I donate them, this year I gave away quite a few new clothes with labels on them.
I also have a hard time letting go of old clothing but since i moved into this new house which actually was built in 1960, i have become more proactive in getting rid of old clothes because of the lack of closet space, so i use this simple rule every time i am cleaning the closet seasonally:
for seasonal clothes-------> have i worn this sweater this season or last season, if no it goes in the charity pile.
In general if i haven't worn a piece of clothing in ** one year** it also goes to the charity pile even if it still has the tags on.
Look for damage like holes, washed out color etc. , I will keep one or two of them for household chores and gardening the rest either goes to charity pile or loved pile.....and it only goes to loved pile if somebody has given it to me and i really really love it (memories sake)
if there is something that i don't like but i wear it because i spent alot of money on it......it also goes to charity pile .
If something doesn't fit....its gone either to loved pile or charity pile.
If something is out of fashion, it is also either in loved pile or charity pile.
Once i am done with the closet, i go through the loved pile again to reduce the size of the pile as much as i can.
In the end i have an almost empty closet. I wash the clothes in the loved pile, iron them so that they are fold nice and tight, put bounce sheets in between the folds and store them in card board boxes in my basement. But yes i also need to let go of these boxes as i have just realized that once they are safely stored in basement i have never actually opened the boxes again.
I don't think I have a problem getting rid of clothes I don't wear and I donate every season. I really don't like keeping stuff that I'm not using especially coz I shop for new stuff every now and then. I do have some really really old jeans and shirts but those I wear so I keep them!
