In a month. Just on average/approximate
Re: How often do you buy/sell stocks
Sometimes I make 6-8 transactions and sometimes 0 for few months, depends on what I buy and what the stock (company) does in that time :)
Re: How often do you buy/sell stocks
Mashallah a reply.
The reason i'm asking is because I recently (4-5 months now) got into stocks. I didn't start with much but I was just wondering how much short-term vs long-term (over a year) taxes factored into people's thinking.
Re: How often do you buy/sell stocks
i think everyone has a different idea. in my case, every month the retirement accounts automatically buy some index funds and ETFs. for my personal account, i buy individual stocks - i try to buy and hold long term, hardly ever sell - so 3-4 purchases every 3-4 months. it is tedious work keeping track of individual companies so i follow a handful and usually just add to them.
used to buy stocks every time i had cash in the account but when the market crashed in 2008-2009 and everything was dirt cheap, i didnt have much money to buy.
now i try to keep some cash buffer in the account in case some crazy dips happen in the market, but no major dips yet. ![]()
what stocks are you keen on? ![]()
Re: How often do you buy/sell stocks
I would be very interested in hearing from someone who trades stocks/bonds/commodities for a living. And im not talking about a broker.....Im talking about at-home traders, who eke a living from trading, whether day trading, or short/long term.
Re: How often do you buy/sell stocks
I doubt we have many (if any) of those type of people here.
Re: How often do you buy/sell stocks
I have never personally traded in stocks and if I have its usually for someone else using my details. Most of my friends are bankers and trade both professionally and personally.
The amount of trades you carry out depend on that particular stock you're holding and how greedy you are. ;)
So, it totally depends on how much you're looking to get out of your investment. And how the stock performs whether its increased in value or dropped. Every stock is different.
Re: How often do you buy/sell stocks
Haven’t really looked in a while. I bought up Sprint a few months ago and that despite falling recently (rose due to the tmus merger) is going good. I just end up making a watchlist of stocks I’m either looking at, and a few I just want to know about (like fb,twitter, etc.).
Re: How often do you buy/sell stocks
I recall U Ahmed had some Gilead that did nicely for you.
Back to topic- about 12 transactions in a year. Last few transactions have been sells. With market at near all time highs, this is a value investor's nightmare.
Among stocks that are ok now LLY WMT XOM and maybe few other integrated oil cos. But none undervalued IMO.
As always, caveats below
1) nothing beats dollar cost averaging into index funds
2) asset allocation
3) do your own homework
I just try to pick stocks that are undervalued wrt S&P500. Probably sound like a broken record.
Re: How often do you buy/sell stocks
I have bought mainly for long term! no monthly thing! more like yearly or even longer. plus the Tax Man wants a bigger cut if you trade too often!
I know it is a lot more risky but I do not believe in Funds, the returns are not as much as compared to investing in equities, my fewvuorites :-) are BA GE VZ FB , they seem to be making good returns for me so far!
Re: How often do you buy/sell stocks
Aside from the RRSP that I contribute to every month (which are invested in pre-allocated profiles with variable risk levels), I've only bought individual stocks twice. One, traded back after a few years and still made a reasonable amount. The other is still invested and these days looks like it's thriving. The first one I sold went from 25 to close to 70 now makes me feel regretful for sure.
Southie, may need your help with the future investments. Will get in touch in Q2.
also, I've witnessed quite a few penny stock successes, I'm afraid I don't feel like my consumer confidence is quite there yet.
Re: How often do you buy/sell stocks
^ What is RRSP?Retirement Savings Plan?Happy to help. Just a disclaimer, I am not a professional.
I never touch penny stocks.
Individual stock picking is fraught with UNNECESSARY risk. Index mutual funds beat 80% of all actively managed funds.
I have lost my shirt in 2000 Tech bubble and 2007 financial bubble. So I am not best model. Have learnt lesson thru schoolnof hard knocks. Happy to share what I have learner.
Re: How often do you buy/sell stocks
Yes, Registered RSP - mutual funds in a preset and professionally managed portfolio.
Re: How often do you buy/sell stocks
Acha. Like the Target funds that change the investment mix per ones age.
