How new technology is changing Pakistani culture

Here is an article from The fridaytimes.
http://www.thefridaytimes.com/news5b.htm
**Banning Cable channels is bad, bad, bad
Shafkat Khan
is outraged by the senseless ban on a number of cable channels which shows how insecure we are as a nation **

The article is about all song and dance channels are being banned. and
the net result has been a mass exodus from the cable to the dish and the decoder, which can provide everything from corn to porn. In an age when information and global access makes censorship a sad joke, it seems that the old-Ziaists in the government have struck again and driven us underground. They have forgotten that the Internet in every home has more than a thousand pornographic channels. News sites carrying every type of information palatable to the Pakistan government or otherwise abound and can be easily entered. Newspapers carry all kinds of reportage from the Indian media. In a world which is now a global information village the Pakistan Regulatory Authority has regressed into an ostrich posture. It doesn’t trust its own people. It thinks they will be brainwashed by the Indians in this year and age when they haven’t succumbed to this in fifty years. How sad!

But earlier in the article it is written:
** Obviously “harmless” “masala channels” like B4U which have nothing but Indian songs and films (which flood our markets) have also been outlawed. From this it follows that these markets should also be closed down and we should all be punished for wanting to see Indian films and hear Indian songs. **

Are we sure “wanting to see Indian films and hear Indian songs” is not already successful brainwashing? And Porn sites Galore on the Internet in every home in Pakistan.

O My Virgina, What ever are we going to do?

Not all homes follow your home's example.

I assume you meant Shafkat Khan's, the author of the article, home. I am merely stating his words!

I got to see one of these Indian movies and see what is this all about. I saw one few years back Biwi #1. up until the hero Salaman Khan ( I remember his name coz I met him in Dallas ) puts that red stuff on his girl friends forehead and the dog jumps and pushes him back and he drops the plate with red stuff. The dog belonged to his wife , man’s best friend except in this case it was womans best friend

, so very Indian!! that was enough couldn’t take any more had to flip the channel.

Flip the Channel ?? It means you had subscibed to the Indian Channels ?

Chori Chori - Love for Indian Channels and On this forum - Foaming

Cool Sahi hai, So very Pakistani.

Btw - I have some pakistani friends here who ask me the names of new Indian movies and they watched GADAR, Sarfarosh And PUKAR also

http://www3.pak.org/gupshup/smilies/wink.gif

(And you know what they liked it )

Hahahahahahaah

AK

What makes you think this move was not on video player.

http://www3.pak.org/gupshup/smilies/wink.gif

How quick you go rabbid

http://www3.pak.org/gupshup/smilies/wink.gif

watch it mod is watching will put you on short leash again

http://www3.pak.org/gupshup/smilies/wink.gif

I know quite a few Indians they asked me for bad bad Paki dramas and I told them Shama, Tanhian, Kiran Kehani, Ankahi and quite a few more and guess what they loved it.

http://www3.pak.org/gupshup/smilies/wink.gif

Because you said you flipped Channel (If you are watching it on Video Player, then you would stop it and not flip the Channel)

I never claimed, we dont like Pakistani serials, We do. You are the one who claimed you dont like Indian movies still subscribe to Indian Channels ( or Rent/Buy Video and watch them)

AK

Basic flaw in your theory! You can flip channels regardless of the status of VCR (ever heard of TV/VCR button) and further I could have been watching in my friends house…. I have lot of sardar friends

http://www3.pak.org/gupshup/smilies/wink.gif

Now how would I know I don’t like Indian movies unless I’ve seen one and how will I see one unless I rent one or hop into my friends house.

http://www3.pak.org/gupshup/smilies/smile.gif

Go and learn how to use TV/VCR Button, then come and talk about it.( If you press it it will show you BLUE screen, then only you can flip the channel If you antenna or Cable is connected thru it and it will leave your VCR still PLAYing the video)

About watching at friends house - Now dont expose your mannerism by saying that - you go to friend’s place and start changing channels without even asking your friends.

If you hate India - Why do you care, good or Bad ?

AK

Hahaha I can see your frustration thats why I said TV/VCR button If you are finding hard to accept someone don’t like Indian movies try something else to justify that instead of getting into technicalities… Besides I am not alone who don’t like Indian movies there are quite a few out there

http://www3.pak.org/gupshup/smilies/wink.gif

I have to admit that I cannot stand either Indian or Pakistani movies. The issue that I was hoping that someone would address was how is the inability of Anyone in Pakistan to 'regulate' information flowing into and out of the country affecting the culture there. I have feeling that there will be an affect, the question is what? From what I see and read, India is busy celebrating Valentine's day. Their fundo group VHP is having problems dealing with that, and they are going around burning Valentine day cards. That is not going to stop the "Westernization" at all. For whatever reason the Indians seem to be making a pact with the western culture and melding in. What is happening in pakistan?

abdali I am with you.

http://www3.pak.org/gupshup/smilies/wink.gif

well said.

http://www3.pak.org/gupshup/smilies/hehe.gif

Like Indian I hate Pak movies too not much difference in style or story.. Hero is rich and heroin is poor or she is rich and he is poor and zalim zamana is between them

http://www3.pak.org/gupshup/smilies/wink.gif

I don’t mind hollywood movies and Pak dramas once in a while.

Western culture is penetrating Pak society gradually right under the nose of mad mullahs. When I was there McDonalds, KFC, Pizza Hut, Dunkin Donuts were all over the place. Its just a matter of time before we will have cable and satellites in every home.

what was wrong to post it in culture and society forum??

....................

now about this post. actually subject was the technology but the article is about banning cable channels.

http://www3.pak.org/gupshup/smilies/frown.gif

Let us consider the present situation for now. All Indian channels are banned right now. Before this was done, I for one did not know there were some excellent Pakistani channels being aired. Channels such as ARY Digital, IM, Indus Vision, Prime will never make me go back to watching Indian channels, even if I had any interest in those awful pathetic Indian channels that showed those awfully long serials such as 'Tara' (which I presume went on to about 500 episodes??).

As for some channels, such as Star World and Star Movies; The PTA (Pakistan Telecom Authority) has decided to let them run as they are mostly airing foriegn films and serials. I noticed that my cable operator started showing them since yesterday, so this means that the PTA has given them the green signal.

I am also glad that worthless crap, such as Zee News, Star News, Doordashan are no longer being aired. However, sometimes I miss the jokers that used to perform on these channels; jokers such as Advani, Jasso Singh and the biggest singing clown of them all -=Vajpayee=-. I remember an Indian movie in which Raj Kapoor played a clown (mera naam joker). I am pretty sure that a sequel to that movie would do very well if the lead role was given to the prime minister himself.

There is another thing that was reported incorrectly in this article. The author says that a mass exodus has taken place towards dish antennas and decoders. As for dish antennas, only one or two channels are bieng aired for free now, so who would want to switch back to dish antennas, secondly, the PTA has also stopped the star retailers from selling cards to subscribers, so how can this have occurred? Besides I do not think that a common man can afford a single decoder along with the high annual subscribtion fee, let alone getting access to other pay networks that their cable used to show them.

An excellent example of ‘NAACHAN NA AAYE TOH AANGAN TEEDA’ proverb

it's just a tit-for-tat move. India has banned Pakistani channels and Pakistan has banned Indian channels. Just the usual crap.
