How much work you do on your car?

I used to change the oil on my own but have been recently taking it to the local mechanic cos of lack of time. This summer InshAllah I will do it just at least once.

Have changed breaks on my old Toyota, which I have since sold, this summer need to work on my Volvo’s
Have changed cv-joints
have done some electric work too.

Re: How much work you do on your car?

I did change oil and spark plugs in my older cars. DOnt do that anymore

Though I recently changed my minivans radio and swith it with CD player. Did the same with my last van where I put CD changer in my van.

Re: How much work you do on your car?

On my SUV I

1) Replaced Water pump
2) Replaced Timimg Belt
3) Replaced front left CV joint
4) Replaced front Rotors (disks)
5) Replaced Front axle bearing

And host of other minor things like break pads, shoes, spark plugs, oil/air filters etc..

The only thing that I have not attempted yet is like piston/piston rings, crank/cam shaft etc.. For the lack of time and some tools.

Re: How much work you do on your car?

Installed a stereo. Took a while, some of those screws are hard to get to.

Re: How much work you do on your car?

i do less and less on my car. I used to do things liek oil change, general repairs, plugs, even some belts, lights, hoses, etc. changing stereos, even car seats, windows.

currently i do nothing, i barely even wash it, other places can do it faster and cheaper than it would cost me to do it myself

Re: How much work you do on your car?

Toyota 4Runner 4WD 1995 with 250K KM still running like new... Always used synthetic oils/grease

Re: How much work you do on your car?

Just the cover or the whole joint shaft? I've got to do change the front left CV joint/shaft. Was it hard?

POS dealer is charging me $280 on a 3 year old car.

Re: How much work you do on your car?

It depends, on some vehicles you have to remove the ball joint and/or axle to slide the CV shaft out, that is where most of the labour is, you need special tools/press to remove and press in the ball joint. On such vehicles its better you take it to the shop.. Once the CV shaft is out its better to replace the whole assembly, Its now off the shelf part, trade in will cost you half the price.

On my SUV it took me an hour for front left I did not had to remove the ball joint.

Re: How much work you do on your car?

I don't feel confident changing the timing belt cos it can really ruin the tuning if we are not being careful.

I guess I will have to shell out those $550 to get one done soon enough.

Re: How much work you do on your car?

Don't you have to remove a lot of parts on top to get to it?

Re: How much work you do on your car?

Oh yeah, it ain't a walk in the park.

Re: How much work you do on your car?
