How much to cook for a party?

I’m throwing a party for about 8 people this thursday. Menu so far is Dil chana ka daal, saag and mango chicken (thanks Daagh!), rice and roti, kulfi for dessert- i might make something else depending on time…

Can someone tell me how much i should make?

  1. Chana daal (the half/split one) how many cups?
  2. Saag/palaak- i’m getting frozen was figuring about 2 packets but will probably do 3 just in case
  3. Chicken- 2 whole chickens gives you about 15 pieces-it’s not a meaty chicken here so it’s 3 pieces of chicken per person…wonder if i should do a 3rd chicken but…that seems much. 1 chicken feeds my husband and i for at least 2 meals and possible a 3rd.

Re: How much to cook for a party?

250 grams daal is enough for about six people!

1 Kg palak in enough for 3 people!

Two chickens? if you make churga - enough for 6 persons.

Re: How much to cook for a party?

so for my numbers i should aim for about 350grams of daal, 3 kg of palak and 3 chickens.

What is Churga?

Re: How much to cook for a party?

^ chicken roast is called churga too :hehe:

Re: How much to cook for a party?

Re: How much to cook for a party?

hunh?

mostar one more question- is that 1kg fresh or frozen?

Re: How much to cook for a party?

In Pakistan, we have only fresh one! So it is fresh!

Re: How much to cook for a party?

dont make every dish of a quantity that would suffice 8 people..if you do thatyou will end up cooking for 24 people if you are planningfor 3 kinds of dishes ! kuch samajh ayee?? :)

Re: How much to cook for a party?

prototype good point i know...but i want to make sure there's enough..so i'm going with a few dishes but plentiful supply you know? argh..i bought like 1kg of frozen spinach i'm betting that's way too much since it's 5 packets and 2 packets feeds my husband and myself for 3-4 days....i might just make 3 probably 4 to be safe.

Re: How much to cook for a party?

if i were you, i'd make 3 chickens...you can always eat leftovers for a couple of days :) chicken always tastes better (at least to me) after it sits in the fridge overnight.

Re: How much to cook for a party?

when cooking for large numbers of people it is important to remember that not everyone is going to eat a full portion of each dish that you prepare.

especially if you are having both rice and naan.....some folks prefer naan and they will not eat rice while others prefer rice and will not touch the naan.

so unless you are very close to the people that you know and are familiar with their preferences/eating habits....don't overcook.

Re: How much to cook for a party?

I usually mess up the daal calculation. So how many cups in a gram?

Re: How much to cook for a party?

I always get so stressed out whenever I prepare food for people other than my husband since he’s gone through all the bad and good dishes that i’ve made and eaten most of them.

For dinner parties, do you all prepare the food 1 day ahead of time? I think that’s the only way my stress level goes down so i’ll have more time to clean the house. But I was wondering is it safe to freeze food before a party? Whenever I store food it smells of the plastic that it was stored in.
I’m planning a get-together too and i’m scared it won’t go well:bummer:

Re: How much to cook for a party?

:p 200 grams= 1cup.

Re: How much to cook for a party?

Mothers should know better, how much you need to prepare for a party, people of six, eight etc.

Re: How much to cook for a party?

I have never, ever frozen food that is to be served at a dinner party. But I'm useless at freezing and using later anyway....it never tastes right...even if I store it properly in air-tight containers.

I rarely even prepare it the day before...unless it's like desert or half-cooked and then finished the day of the party.

Perhaps it's easier for me because hubby helps out with the tidy-ing up on the day and I can focus on just the cooking.

Re: How much to cook for a party?

The trick with the frozen food is to reheat it in a pan and if possible give it a tarka. Saag, haleem etc come out great.

belle, thank you. :flower1:

Re: How much to cook for a party?

You are lucky to have your hubby's helping hand it does makes a lots difference, especailly when you've a bunch of people for lunch/dinner (one always needs an extra hand)
