So if i am going to a wedding (not a close friend or relative), how much money should i give (in US)? whats the appropriate amount thats given these days ?
i am totally against gifts unless its a registry because I remember i got tons of useless things from desi people and it’s much better to give money.

i remember back home my family always used to add 1 Rupee to whatever the rounded figure was...like $501, 1001, 1501 etc. i used to wonder why? my sister told me that 1 represents the Oneness of God. people tried to give muNh dikhaaii, aur wedding gift in the form of an ODD number.
even number was considered Un-Islamic...lol

if you received one invitation card, you give one gift. a couple is one unit. so give just $51. :)
make sure you and your hubby eat worth at least $50 in order to get your money's worth. :D

Yea, I was going to mention the odd number thing too lol. My general rule of thumb is $51 if it's someone I don't know very well, $101 if it's an actual friend/close relation

^ same! I I only learned about the +$1 thing when I moved to the US because we don't have 1 dollar bills in Canada lol. I got a lot of plus ones, thought it was a cute gesture.

we should petition the government to bring back the ONE dollar bill for this very purpose.
btw, my bro gave me an uncut sheet of $1 and $2 bills as a gift the day i received my PhD degree. :)

LOL I've never seen or heard of pakistanis giving odd number money. I've always believed it was a hindu thing because in their shows and stuff you see them giving odd number money or when presenting/ (charaying) to God they give like 11, 101, 501 rupees.

recently, in one of the Indian Crime shoes, i heard the girl use the word "fatwa" in connection with how men use and abuse women. the usage of this word, like Shahadat, is gaining popularity among the shudh Hindi speakers.
you might have heard: Shaheed Bhagat Singh. the concept of shahaadat is not there in Hinduism.
