Then they'd question their son and would do the same thing to him. I'm kinda getting tired of pretending to be a subdued DIL. But I don't wanna come across as an arrogant and snobby bahu.

not giving a befitting reply to someone when you are capable of doing so are the signs of bravery & self-control and not being subdued.

I didn’t even let my husband buy a new car so that the inlaws don’t become jealous/sad.

I have yet to come across parents who become “jealous” of their kids progress (financial progress that is). Even if what they are saying does not make sense, you simply can not question their intentions/motives.

I don't know if they're jealous or not but they become very unhappy about our expenditures....whether it's the house furnishing, new car, my child's drama class, my clothes or school fee.

It's not jealousy as such ... I think they have lived a very different sort of life - a prudent life - where they have had to save every penny to give me and siblings a decent upbringing ... They can't or don't want to understand the idea of "living in the now" and it concerns them that we are be wasteful ... And I guess may be I should evaluate my contribution to them as well ...

If they're so worried about us saving up the money then they shouldn't be happy with the expensive gifts and money they receive from you.
I know what it is. Spending money on wife and kids is fazool kharcha.
