How much do you judge a person

for not having good english (written and spoken)?

Recently, I’ve met some pretty smart individuals who are sort of off-putting in that their grammar isn’t correct and their accents are messed up and it is quite difficult to understand them. If I didn’t know them and if I was to read their posts on GS, I certainly would be stereotyping them in a negative way. And I don’t understand that, considering their lack of english in understandable as it isn’t their first language. So… why do we do it? Since when did english become the language on the basis of which we could judge a person’s intellect?

PS: Don’t tell me I’m the only one who does so :emmy: I’m not the one who came up with the term “FOB” which I’ve noticed is also used widely for desis with poor english.

Re: How much do you judge a person

Maybe cuz it's the universal language and there is greater emphasis placed on being proficient in it. But then again, even incorrect urdu can annoy me. And the southern accent turns me off....i don't care how intelligent the individual might be.

I'll be honest. Poor grammar is among my pet peeves. I also teach language arts, maybe that has something to do with it, lol.

Re: How much do you judge a person

ehh honestly I do judge people based on their grammar, vocabulary, spelling, and communication skills.

Re: How much do you judge a person

I try not to judge a person based on their style of writing...........heck 75% of the time my brain is on off-mode when I come on here.......I rarely write grammatically correct sentences, doesn't necessarily mean I can't

I actually personally know someone who purposely writes a certain way on forums

Why do we judge? Don't know maybe its because we assume that the way people write is the way they talk, which rarely is the case

Re: How much do you judge a person

How universal is it though? The people I'm talking about are not even desis, they're Europeans. If they, being EU citizens, don't have a good grasp of the language, why do we expect people from entirely different parts of the world to be so fluent and perfect?

I'm hoping to eradicate these judgements/presumptions from my bheja.

Once you get to know these people, you really don't care what they talk like, they earn your respect in other exceptional ways.

Re: How much do you judge a person

I am also the same way. I don't look for mistakes but they stand out to me like sore thumbs.

I do see Guac's point though where unless you're at school or in a professional setting, it can be exhausting to constantly be in that mode. Its not necessarily anyone else's pet peeve. A lot of times I don't even bother capitalizing because I am that tired.

I have met people at work or in school that are intelligent, capable and successful...but they're hand writing or written grammar is terrible. My high school English teacher's hand writing was completely illegible and he was brilliant.

I have to say...when I use the word FOB I use it for people who come off as narrow-MINDED. Meaning, its not their grammar I am uncomfortable with...its their thought process.

Re: How much do you judge a person

Judging a person based on their grammar, accent (yes even "southern") is hollow. There are lots of posters right here who write broken English - but are extremely funny (and I think funny people are very bright).

As for accent, North jeers the South, West jeers North and South - so grow up time maybe i sin the cards.
