depends on how lavish it is and how many guests you're having... each wedding is different, its hard to do an "average" cost.

Yeah I agree SGC it's hard to come up with an average because everyone has a certain number of guests and diff ideas for their wedding.
Aaana, I said $50,000 because I'm including the costs for the jahez, the cost for the hotels that some guests will be staying in..there are a million little things that pop up in the end that are costly..and I estimated how many people I'll have at my wedding and it came out to about 300 people so everything put together will turn out to cost that much.

Remember one thing....
Spend sensibly cos you could be paying off the money all your life, i know a friend of a friend who spent so much on his wedding and 2 years on they are still paying it off!
It would be better to save the money for a house and future to give you a better start in life!!

Thats the thing....if u can afford it and if ur parents can afford it, great....but if you're spending so much that ull end up in debt for years, being financially crippled.....then its sooo not worth it!

I would not get myself into debt to have a lavish wedding, people are just gonna come, eat and go home!! they won't even remember anything a month later.
So don't spend to impress others!

i totally agree.. a couple i know had this huuggee wedding, her lehnga cost sooo much, she went in a doli, everything was really extravagent and a yr later they split up, sadly all that comes to mind is..what a waste!
i think its best to keep things reasonable but unfortunately nowadays everything is about show and becomes a competition so we all go all out..its nice as long as the meaning behind it isnt lost

I think this is a highly debatable issue...You can cut down on the whole cost big time if you don't indulge in non-necessities such as designer bridal wear, designer jewelery, five-star hotel as your wedding menu, one can go on and on and on...

i think the biggest problem with pakistani weddings is the number of people that you need to invite.. people get invited if they are not invited, so the numbers keep increasing which means the venue has to be big enough, catering everything costs so much more.. for my wedding we're looking to have upto 500 people and thats excluding most of my family (as they live in pakistan and wont b able to come). this also means that parents become more conscious of everything and always think 'log kya kahen ge' (which drives me mad)!

^ I think it really depends…i think its okay if u indulge in one thing, like u really love to travel, then dish out for five star hotels and awesome honeymoon packages, or if ur really into fashion, obviously designer clothes are the thing… or if u really like ur guests, get a great hall with great food…
Trouble happens when they cry over EVERYTHING has to be the best of the best, everything has to be designer, everything has to be 5-star…Just watch “My Big Fat Fabulous Wedding” on WE tv, ull get an idea of what I’m saying…
I wudn’t say that our wedding was “lavish” and “grand”, at least not compared to what some ppl here are willing to spend and classify as “lavish” but no way was it cheap or cheap-looking…

i'd be willing be spend on good makeup, good photography and good food. (if anything our desis will remember its the food). u could cut costs with clothes, jewellery (even though gold is a good investment), fancy schmancy wedding invitations, decorations, party favors, venue etc.
i totally agree with inviting only your most loved ones to your wedding if you plan to have a grand one but unfortunately thats not how it works in my family. u need to invite everyone from your community. 300+ people and even if its an average place that costs $50 per head ...that adds up! goras tend to get away with one event but desis have three. i fail to see how anyone can keep their budget low in such a situation.

but isnt the cost usually split between the families and the couple contributes too, so that no one person is paying for the bulk of it?

for desis? i dont know for others but I think its the girls side paying for the shaadi,and boys side for the valeema and then they share the costs for mehendi for their guests. but even then it comes to 25k for just the events supposing 300 people..this doesnt include the jewellery, clothes, DJ, Deco, Gifts, Transportation, jahez (if you have the custom)....i dont see how we can hold one for under 25k.... :"(
