Since last couple of years, I have tried to keep as little cash in my wallet as possible and make use of my debit card on maximum occasions. Not because of security reasons but because cash seems to go out more rapidly than I would like.
I usually have 500 Rupees and not much else.

Generally I avoid handling money as much as possible… and unless I plan to spend it I dont carry cash.
Card is an altogether different problem as I always have that on me and if I am not spending it I know the Mrs is definatley buying something Online… 
As for petty cash One always carries some coins as they are prefferable to notes, you can always make use of coins to pay the needy or just pay-back anyone who insults you by flinging some copper at them. 
Now you all know I’m too nice to do that in real life…

I tend to spend more with my bank card. Because it is easier. But in the case of cash you see it right away if you are spending too much.

not more than 50 bucks at any given time. Debit N Credit Cards come-in handy. no need to carry large sums. while visiting India, i carry around Rs. 5000 at ALL times. :)

at least $50-$60 cash since some places do not have debit / credit card options ( still) but nothing more since i tend to spend it without even realizing it.. :hinna:

around 5 to 10 k in Pakistan and around 100 bucks outside pakistan .. Plastic money doesnt come much handy in Pak ...

40 to 80 bucks normally. when going out with family/friends i carry 120 to 200 just in case.
in pak 30 to 50k.

Usually none, I try to keep at least a 20 for emergency situations but it never lasts long
