I have been thinking that our diet is far too unhealthy. We don’t have veggie dishes often enough, and that is asking for trouble for later on because too much meat is bad news for health. Also I think we use more oil than necessary.
So, how I guess we have meat / chicken about 5 or 6 days in a week, fish about twice a month. Fish is good, meat is bad.
Re: How many times a week do you consume meat / chicken?
every day. I try to stick to baked chicekn as much as I can. However, we have mutton and beef less often. Fish is good too. I bake it whenever I get a chance.
Re: How many times a week do you consume meat / chicken?
Hmmm, maroush, eastern and RV, looks like your diet is healthier than mine, so you take care about red meat. I feel quite bad now bcos we have red meat about 4 days.
Ghabbar, thats baaaaaad! Start your cogitation on vegetation!!!

If you're going to eat red meat, the choose healthier alternatives. Goat instead of cow for example.
If you lean more towards the meat for the protein factor, then substitute with other filling and healthier proteins. For example cholay or chanay. Daal. Various beans. Or eggs. You can make a yummy egg salan. SO for those four days, how about making a salan of cholay, a salan of eggs, another vegetarian dish (eggplant? keralay? bhindi?) and chicken as oopposed to read meat.
Re: How many times a week do you consume meat / chicken?
Come to think of it... theres hardly any day in a week where we dont have meat in any form..red meat, fish, chicken, deer, turkey, shrimps.. but you're right we should try limiting out consumption of meat.. it isnt good... we should promote veggies and daalz..
ps: also, why is it that when we invite someone over for lunch/dinner or if we go to someone's home, theres got to be atleast one dish containing meat in it. Why can it not be simply veggies ? if we invite someone at our place and cook only veggie dishes, is it considered disrespecting them? just curious..
Re: How many times a week do you consume meat / chicken?
nice thread ! I was always wondering about others - how much Chicken they have!
Hubby loves chicken - so it’s like 6 days a week - some type of chicken. Yuck I hate chicken now. I make it almost 355 days per year with other side dishes like dal or any veg salan or whatever…
Red meat - once in 6 months. Hubby does not like it cause it’s not so healthy.
Shrimp - LOL - well in Amrika you get BIG packet of shrimp. So once I buy the packet - I use it once per week until it’s finished… and then I don’t make it for next six months - or until I remember to buy more.
Fish - I love fish… hubby is so so with it… so ummm once every 3 months. I never cook anything just for myself. I would rather choose to go hungry than cook just for myself:halo:
Re: How many times a week do you consume meat / chicken?
I used to have fish three times a week but now i'm having chicken about 5 times a week instead. The good part is I do not go near any desi curries. I'd rather stay away from them as I do not intend on becoming fat lol I incorporate vegetables with my chicken as it is a healthier option.

Yes, traditionally it is considered an insult, as to why? I'm not sure, but my guess is that veggies cost less and are awfully easy to cook, whereas meat doesnt. Meat is more expensive, needs more time/effort to cook? So serving veggies only at a dawat shows carelessness/cheapness on the part of the host (UNLESS the guests/hosts happen to be strict vegetarians!)
Re: How many times a week do you consume meat / chicken?
I try to eat a salad before the meat that fills me up so I consume less meat. I don't like subzi ki bhujia only. You can add veggies to chicken slaan too.
Re: How many times a week do you consume meat / chicken?
Yes, no meat when you invite guests is an insult (well, wouldn't be to me!). Instead of meat and 2 veg, for desi's its 2 meat and 1 veg (if u r lucky) Otherwise its 2 meat, 1 chicken and 1 rice with chicken. OTT, IT MUST STOP!
In my efforts to reduce meat and chicken consumption, my husband has had no choice but to eat daal, saag, channa aloo chaat (low fat yogurt!), baingan, salmon and mushroom pasta in the past few days. Its marvellous and he hasn't complained but he did try to happily suggest that I cook lamb chops and chicken all on one day. I was having none of it!
However, I relented and made chappli kebabs yesterday, and for the first time ever I exercised PORTION CONTROL! Yes, all interested parties, please try this, its amazing. Only cook and serve how much is a HEALTHY PORTION, NO MORE than that. Then there's no seconds, so if someone is hungry, they fill up on vegetables.
I'm so proud of myself! I thought it would be quite difficult to change our diet into a healthy one, but its easy. HOORAY FOR PORTION CONTROL AND VEGETABLES! I don't know why I didn't do this earlier.
Thats a lot of chicken. I have read somewhere that chicken’s are fed hormones and other chemicals to make the meat fat and tender and for them to grow fast, this can be transferred to humans on consumption. Scare him with that, and bring on the vegetables on their own.
Shrimp is rather healthy, right?
If husband is a curry man, make a dry fish curry, he might take to it then. I’m same as you, I’d rather go hungry than cook for myself too, but it’s not a good practice.

Hey, I don't agree that desi curries make you fat, if you cook with measured oil. I suppose there is a big difference in fat though if you have baked / steamed chicken breast and fatty chicken thigh curry.
Re: How many times a week do you consume meat / chicken?
Corruptangel, I'm pleased to see you have a healthy sounding diet.
Eastern, I like that idea to fill up on salad / veg before eating meat. Then you won't want so much of it. I told my mother in law to do that too, but she says she needs chapatti to fill her up and she can't have that with salad, lol.
lol @ shrimp in amreeka, watch out.. shrimp got load of cholestrerol…i think once in month is good.
ok back to topic…i cook once a week as i work so i make 2 meat dishes (chicken, and goat salan or biryani) 2 vegi dish, and 2 daals. i make fish too, but most of the time over the weekend we eat fish out as my hubby can’t stand smell.
