I was reading a reply in the general forum to the topic of why there arent banglas in gupshup. one of the replys was quite hostile said being a punjabi muslim i naturally hate bangladeshis. they r traitors and many r not proper muslims. never wanted to meet one. couple of other scathing remarks. i cant quite fathom this type of hostility. of course this all has to do with banglas breaking away but that was years ago and possibly for legit reasons. plus theres many banglas that had nothing to do with it, didnt support it and werent born or were young when bangla got independence. who cares if they like fish, arent as martial as pashtuns and punjabis, or r dark?
But aren’t they also short, and ugly, and well kind of smelly? And we Pakistanis are white, tall, and beautiful and always smell of roses?

It’s good i didn’t read that thread in General; i think my blood pressure will rise if i do. i can’t say this about Americans, or Canadians, or Pakistanis, or Africans, or Russians, or anyone else but i have found this true in my personal experiences - every single Bangladeshi i have met in my 23 years has been friendly, polite, and kind towards me. And they knew i was Pakistani.
i definitely don’t hate Bangladeshis. Infact i have found them to be more often helpful, generous, warm-hearted. They’re great people to have as friends, once you break down the initial barrier (which exists between two strangers in all cases), then they will overwhelm you with their generosity. i have always found this to be true.
Here’s an irony… at my uni a few years ago, the only girl who was asked to run for an executive position on the Pakistani Students’ Society was - Bangladeshi, born and bred in Bangladesh. One of the nicest gals i know.
i think bangladeshis r great people...i had a bangladeshi friend and she was a very very very nice, warm, generous, caring, helpful and great girl...
who cares if they r dark or whatever? un ke goray honay se mein ne kya karna hae...
all i know is they r dil k achay
Allah kee nazron mein gore kalay se fark naheen parta
i think its dangerous to classify any group of people as generous, warmhearted, friendly, humurous, etc since it just leads to the mentality of attributing traits to whole groups of people.

Yes, that's true - it IS dangerous to classify any group of people with either positive or negative traits. However, what both Irem and i were stating, was based upon our personal experiences. She made her comment based upon that Bangladeshi friend of hers, as i made my comments based upon the Bengalis i have met. Of course, there are "good" and "bad" people everywhere - whether we are Chinese, Indian, Pakistani, or whatever. Ham sab mai hai - we have equal qualities of everything. It's sad that, only when Pakistanis are praising Bengalis do i hear the comment that - we shouldn't stereotype an entire group of people. But when we Pakistanis criticize or make fun of those 'fish-eating' Bengalis, then the stereotyping comments for some reason don't apply... or at least aren't enforced in an equal manner.
Anyways i get heated up when i talk about this issue, and i know i am angering some individuals so i'll shut my mouth... for now.
ravage haanji ye baat bhee so feesad theek hae aap ki :k:
Nadia yup u got me correctly there ![]()
Bangladeshis are our brothers! It was India that germinated a seed of misunderstanding between us.
I have never seen one Pakistani hating a Bengali. Bengalis are our brothers just as Malysians, Iranians or any other Muslims!!!
The ones I met were the nicest and politest people.
bengalis are nice people. however, that does not mean i like them or hate them. they are nice to thats enough for me.
nadia_h, have you ever met any bad / arrogant person in your life? whenever someone talks about some group / people, you are always there with remarks like they are so nice and this and that. in that regards, i just want to say one thing that you see world from your own eyes. you'll see what you REALLY want to see. if i want to see bad things in you, i'll definitely find bad things in you to criticize you. you can't make others see what you see. so its not necessary that if one person is nice to you is nice to others as well. we all learn from our own experiences. :)

Hey hey hey..
no offense intended at all.
take care.
vivek, not to be able to overcome racial prejudice and let it influence ure decisions/thoughts concerning Bangladeshi ppl would probably be considered quite backwards in this day and age
there are negative and positive points abt everyone and everything, whats happened in the past cant be blamed on the kids of the future it wasnt their fault
I am punjabi-pakistani, I dont hate people based on nationality.
I have met some bengali people here in uk, uni, office etc.
they were all nice to me still knowing i am a Pakistani. We also discuessed the issues of hate, they can be right to hate us as most mistakes have been done by western Pakistanis before the fall of Dhaka!
The people of Bengal are well known for their love of poetry, politics and they are easy to talk to.

Of course, i have met arrogant individuals in my life. i am not saying everyone is a Mother Teresa.
i don't make remarks in the WA Forum that everyone should like Americans. i only make these types of anti-stereotyping remarks for groups of people whom i think are always the underdogs, and they are always marginalized including by Pakistanis and by Muslims in general. Such as black people.
i'm not saying everyone has to think like me, i may sound arrogant on these Forums. In 'real life', i am not that arrogant to expect everyone to think like me. Believe me i have thousands of flaws inside which only Allah knows of. i am not perfect and i have never stated i am. There are literally millions of individuals who are better than i am and i accept that, and always will. Yes we all learn from our personal experiences so if anyone wants to disagree with me - please go right ahead, i am not stopping you. There is a verse from the Quran, O ye who believe! Stand out firmly for justice, as witnesses to Allah, **even as against yourselves....** The source of my frustration is when we raise to elevation beliefs and customs that have no sanction in Islam - such as racism. There were comments against Bangladeshis in a General Forum thread, which i was really disturbed to read. How can we justify that if we call ourselves Muslims ? It's stuff like that, that frustrates me. To criticize it, is not to imply that i am Mother Teresa incarnate. Nowhere close. More than anything, it's more of a reminder for myself about aspects where i can also strive for self-improvement. That's all.
Nadia … :k:
My best-friend over the past 20 years who is like a sister to me is a British born and raised Bengali. I know her husband and both of their entire families. There are good and bad people from every culture, nationality and background. It was quite idiotic for whoever made those nasty remarks towards Bengalis … however, they did an excellent job of showing how truly ignorant they are and also did a good job of making Punjabis look bad as he/she used that as justification for their comments.
I like and dislike all humans on the same criteria. nationality, religion and race etc have nothing to do with it.
I have not met many bengladeshi folks, but those that I did were no different than other ppl, some I liked some I did not.
I think the feeling of hatred is more from Bengalis towards pakistanis (and for good reason too!!). Most Pakistanis I have met are kind of embarrassed about the way we treated Bengalis whilst they were in the federation. Obviously we joke about the dark colour, the never-ending floods, the fish and rice, the poverty etc etc but deep down we have no probs with bengalis.
On the other hand, I have met very few bengalis and almost all of them have a problem with pakistan. Mind you, these are older people that I am talking about. I was chatting to this old geezer once in someones house and to make conversation, I mentioned the '71 war and the guy was fuming!! He was in tears as he mentioned how his brothers were shot by the Pakistani army in his own house. I felt embarrassed by the whole thing. It is similar to the way kashmiris are being treated by the Indian forces.
Our brothers and sisters in Bangladesh are as good as the Muslims of any other country.
I don't know about this man. I have never met a Pakistani in my life who hates Bengalis. Although I get the feeling from some Bengali freinds that they resent Pakistan for what happened in 1971. But they resent India a lot more cause apparently India floods them every year of something like that.
Anyway, I is not a good idea to classify anybody by race or ethnic origin, there are good and bad people in every group. We should have no problem with Bengalis especialyl since they are our brothers.
We had Bangladeshi family friends - educated, nice, polite and refined people. My sisters best friend was Bangladeshi and my mother had some good Bangladeshi friends. They are very different from us no doubt, in terms of language and culture.
Oh I just remembered, my first ever crush was Bangladeshi! ahahaha! We were like 12. 10 years later we still write to each other and laugh about it. Off topic I know, but it has to do with Bangladeshis.
^^ Same here Cat-Woman … my first crush was on a bengali boy who lived down the street. I was about 7 years old at the time … and my mom told him that he had to hold my hand to school everyday as he was a few years older and would walk me to school every morning … those were the days … ![]()
