I used to be a scrounger – still am in a lot of instances, but being a Software Engineer myself, I need to be cognizant of the efforts of developers and technologists who make these things available for us to use. Yeah yeah I know what you’re thinking… same ole sermon but I will admit to still downloading free software in most cases.
For graphics & multimedia apps as well as business apps, my philosophy is to pay for any “mission-critical” applications. Right now, these include things like SPSS, EndNote, QSR-NViVo, Matlab and Maple with MS Office Apps playing more of a support role.
and yes… my first attempt would be to get my employer to pay for it… then use my professional expense account… followed by personal funds :)

One of the reasons I resort to grabbing software for free online is because I'm a student and I have limited funds. Some of the software that I need such as the OS, MS Office, Adobe Photoshop & Acrobat, etc. are mad expensive.
If I start purchasing these software, I'd be on streets in no time.
However, once I become financially stable, I do plan on purchasing most of the software, insha'Allah as I do feel bad just taking them from the net.
Nonetheless, I try my best to always purchase the OS, NAV and MS Office. I find it vital because MS's software keeps coming up with serious security holes/problems and that could only be fixed by downloading patches from their website. Often times this can't be done because of the use of illegal keys and cracks.
Oh... while speaking about purchasing software. I'm using original Windows Key as it came with the laptop. NAV, I got it from a friend, which I burned so alhamdulillah no worries there. However, my MS Office is running on pirated KEY. I've been thinking of purchasing an original one, but not sure if they're coming out with a new version soon. If such is the case, then I'd like to wait.
Also, are there any members here who get software on discounts, so that students like myself can contact them to purchase software at a discounted rate?

ruined the businesses from my attempts to provide zero-day stuff to million-hits/week sites (back in 96 when crap wasnt common:p)
and as umer mentioned, life cycle changes and you start supporting them.. you see the BIG picture and stop..
since started note-chaaping now (:p) i try to buy the software.. THOUGH guilty of using it for free/pirated the first time.. and then buy it for the heck of it.. (same with movies and stuff)

Why buy a software?Why go to shops?And waste ur time?
If u can download every software(full, latest…) for free online! But you must have fast Internet connection.
Also you can buy softwares on warez websites just for $25 each software! I ordered few and they worked aite!

Like faizy and I said… it really depends on your mindset and philosophy. The S/W you take for granted is someone’s hard earned bread’n’butter but yes… I’ve realized talking ethics doesn’t do anything. You’ll either realize this later in life yourself or you won’t - in either case… no one can’t do much.
Sadiyah, I hear ya… and I empathize with students and their needs - but yes, it hurts to see people who “can” pay but choose not to.

I try to stay away from pirated softwares. There are a lot of softwares that are open source and/or free and work just as good.
I do use paid software once in a while as well but that's only if I find a deal on them.

the non mainstream ones.. i am forced to buy them cuz there are no 'free' versions available.. like RAW processors for my camera and other imaging apps/plugins etc..
