Re: How many of you are you are proud of your roots?
I don't see a reason to be proud of something that I didn't do . . . I didn't pick to be born in the United States and have parents who were born in pakistan. I didn't pick to be a girl. I didn't pick to be the color i am or the ethnicity i am. . . etc. I see no reason to be proud of this stuff. I thank God that he has made me who I am and I hope that he guides me to becoming a better a person Ameen.
And my ancestors, well, i love them. And so therefore I love all of humanity because really like Nia said above, it all comes down to Hazrat Adam (pbuh)and Hazrat Hawwa (pbuher).
Now if you want to talk culture, i would say that i like parts of the american culture and i like parts of the pakistani culture and i will hopefully take the best from both worlds. I will take the best from my husband's culture as well. In fact, any culture that I come across, I will try to learn from.
As for religion, i thank God I am muslim but i am not PROUD. God doesn't like those who are proud. I prefer to be humble or at least try to be humble.
I respect your above opinions but let me add something which is no way an assault to anybody's opinion. It's a general statement.
Animals are never proud of their origin. People from underdeveloped societies are never proud of their culture or language. They quickly adopt the culture, language and customs of those whom they consider subconsciously superior. Jewish people, Germans, Japanese are proud of themselves and that's why they have developed themselves to become what they are. Those from underdeveloped countries or developing countries have inferiority complex and they quickly surrender to the dominating culture. Those who struggle for survival will never be proud of their roots.
After getting the replies from the readers in this thread now I understand why Islamic nations get regualarly humiliated in the international arena and why no Islamic nation has developed strong institutions for others to emulate. The opinion in this thread convincingly demonstrates why African and Islamic countries have no say in any world affairs. I am pretty sure most of the respondent in this thread speak English in their homes. Recently I was astonished when I learnt that out of 310 families of my community in Toronto, a whoopping 300 families speak English in their homes. This just demonstartes that Desi language is substandard, desi culture is substandard and that's why nobody has any reason to be proud of his or her roots. And when people have nothing to be proud of then they will talk of humanity or African origin or things like that. Those who consider themselves to be proud Americans should realize that this giant America is being controlled by a tiny Jewish group. I must salute them.
