Re: How many languages do you
Is standard Bengali the same as Dhaka Bengali or do u mean the 'posh' Bengali they speak on the news?
On a sliding scale I'm fluent in speaking English, French, German, Bengali.. ok-ish in Urdu.. and can get by (ie hold a conversation but not discuss current affairs lol) in Arabic and Swedish.. If people speak Punjabi, Hindi or any Latin language I can usually get the gist of what they're saying (did Latin at school for 7 yrs so that comes in handy)..
Some of those languages I can't read or write in tho :( and being honest if a family member speaks to me in another language I tend to be lazy and just answer in English..
the dialect of Bengali that has been deemed the 'Standard' status. i think the Haldia dialect.
yep, the very same one. news channels, books, magazines.
I love how Dhakai Bengali sounds. almost musical!
its quite rare to find someone else who can speak fluent Bengali in GS!

From my mum! She's mixed.. Yeah, Dhaka Bengali sounds lovely but my favourite is Kolkata Bengali.. so perfect :) 90% of the Bangladeshis in the UK speak the Sylheti dialect tho so u don't hear much 'real' Bengali.. To me their language sounds a lot harsher..
When I was little my mum did try and teach me the Bengali alphabet but I never got beyond the first couple of lines, it's really bad but the only word I can read and write is my first name..
Are u from India or Bangladesh?

sorry for the late replies, i dont come online so regularly anymore. :)
yeah, the Kolkata one is the standard Bengali.
AND, i am a Sylheti Bengali myself! :D
yes, i agree, Sylheti is the most harshest dialect among all Bangali dialects. and Sylhetis are considered the Punjabis among the Bengalis. :P they always jump around.
i studied Bengali for 5 years and Hindi for another 5 when i changed school, and i still suck at them both. ;) i mean i am okay orally and can read and write both okay-ish, but the fact that i've never read ANY Bangali or Hindi book speaks for it self!
i am an Indian Sylheti Bengali. grandparents came from East Pakistan in 47. :)
my mom's dad still talks about the 'old country' and all.
